Ilkay Gundogan Involved in Montpellier Ownership Bid

Montpellier HSC, French champions barely more than a decade ago and now marooned in Ligue 2, stand on the brink of a major ownership shake-up – with a familiar Premier League name involved.

According to L’Équipe, British investment fund GSS have entered advanced talks to buy into the club, and former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is part of the bid. Discussions with owner Laurent Nicollin are said to be moving towards an agreement, though the exact structure of the deal remains open.

Nicollin’s reluctant search for help

The process began with a public cry for support. During the 2024/25 season, as sporting and financial pressures mounted, Nicollin openly called for new investment. He circulated a ten-page dossier to leading French investment banks, outlining the club’s situation and its need for fresh capital.

“We are throwing a hook into the sea,” he wrote, making clear that his preference was not to sell Montpellier outright. Yet the tone was pragmatic. Given the club’s trajectory, Nicollin accepted he might be forced to step back and accept a minority role. “Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year,” he added, a stark line that captured the mood around La Paillade.

Relegation to Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 campaign confirmed those fears. The club failed to bounce straight back, and, like Stade de Reims – relegated in the same season – did not even manage to reach the promotion playoffs. A second year outside the top flight has only sharpened the sense that structural change is no longer optional.

GSS talks advance, with Gundogan and Karbassiyoon on board

Into that vacuum stepped GSS. The existence of a British suitor first surfaced in April, though the group’s identity remained under wraps at the time. Now, their interest has hardened into concrete negotiations with Nicollin.

L’Équipe report that an agreement is edging closer. It is not yet clear whether GSS will push through a full takeover or settle for a significant minority stake alongside Nicollin, but the direction of travel points towards a new power balance at the club.

Gundogan’s presence in the bid adds a high-profile footballing figure to the investment side of the project. The Germany international, who made his name at Manchester City, is joined by Daniel Karbassiyoon, the former Arsenal, Burnley and Ipswich Town player, who is also involved in the GSS-led move.

Montpellier’s recent history has been defined by a slow slide from their 2012 Ligue 1 title to second-tier frustration. Whether this British-backed proposal becomes the lever that lifts them back towards the elite – or the moment the Nicollin era truly recedes – now rests on the final strokes of a deal that is edging into view.
