Freiburg's Igor Matanovic Responds to Manchester United and Tottenham Transfer Speculation

Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic has spoken out amid swirling rumours linking him to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The 23-year-old forward has started the Bundesliga season strongly, but insists his focus remains with Julian Schuster’s side.

Interest from Premier League Giants

Both Manchester United and Tottenham are reportedly eyeing a move for the prolific Freiburg striker. United want to reinforce their attack, especially as they seek a replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, who has ties to Fiorentina.

Matanovic, though, has firmly dismissed any imminent transfer plans. He has already scored four goals in as many Bundesliga games this season, including a recent goal against Werder Bremen.

No Contact with Other Clubs

Speaking after the match, Matanovic was clear about his current situation: "As far as I’m concerned, I’m currently at Freiburg. There has been absolutely no contact with anyone from my side."

The 6ft 5in striker attributes his recent success not just to physical training but to mental focus. "People often think success comes from hard work, which is true, but football is more of a mental game. When you’re clear-headed, not hesitating or overthinking, things just happen. If I start doubting myself, it doesn’t work."

Rising Star in Germany

Since moving from Eintracht Frankfurt to Freiburg last summer, Matanovic’s value has soared. Last season, he netted 15 goals in all competitions and helped Freiburg reach the Europa League final, where they lost to Aston Villa.

When asked about his decision to join Freiburg, the striker responded without hesitation: "Yes, of course. It was a big step. Thanks to Freiburg, I also made it to the World Cup, which was a huge achievement for me as a young player."

Although he didn’t score during his appearances for Croatia in the World Cup against England, Ghana, and Portugal, that experience seems to have boosted his confidence and form this season.

Transfer Deadline Approaches

Matanovic is under contract until June 2029, giving Freiburg little reason to sell unless an irresistible offer arrives before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. Both Manchester United and Tottenham face a tough challenge to complete any deal.

For now, Matanovic is expected to continue leading Freiburg’s attack, aiming to extend his scoring streak and help the team maintain strong early-season performances.
