Ibrahima Konate Joins Real Madrid on Massive Contract
Ibrahima Konate is set to swap Anfield for the Bernabeu on a free transfer – and the scale of his new pay packet underlines exactly why Real Madrid pushed so hard to get him over the line.
The French defender’s contract at Liverpool expires on June 30 after lengthy negotiations failed to produce an agreement. Liverpool confirmed his departure last weekend in the same breath as announcing the dismissal of Arne Slot, drawing a hard line under one era and exposing a glaring hole in the heart of their defence.
Konate then broke his silence, admitting he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game”. Sentiment aside, his next move is brutally clear.
Galactico money for a free agent
Fabrizio Romano revealed that Konate has verbally agreed to join Real Madrid on a four-year deal, dependent on Florentino Perez retaining the presidency ahead of challenger Enrique Riquelme. Spanish outlet El Desmarque has now lifted the lid on the financial side of that agreement.
Konate’s contract, running to 2030, is expected to be worth €24 million gross per season – around €460,000 a week, or roughly £400,000 before tax. Over four years, that comes to a reported £83 million in wages alone if he sees out the full term.
The numbers do not stop there. Because he arrives as a free agent, Konate is also in line for a signing-on bonus of around £17 million. Real Madrid are paying no transfer fee, but they are certainly paying the price of elite talent in today’s market.
For context, Konate was said to be on about £150,000 a week at Liverpool. Madrid are not just offering a step up in profile; they are tripling his salary. He also rejected a huge proposal from Saudi Arabia to make the move to Spain, underlining the pull of the European champions and the platform of the Bernabeu.
Liverpool left to rebuild
Back on Merseyside, the fallout is immediate and severe. Liverpool, having just appointed Andoni Iraola as Slot’s successor, now face a summer of major surgery.
Konate is gone. Andy Robertson and Mo Salah are also heading for the exit. That is a leadership core, a left flank and a centre-back all ripped out in one window. For a club that prides itself on planning, this is a brutal reset.
The search for replacements has already taken an unexpected turn. TEAMtalk report that Liverpool have identified Burnley defender Maxime Estève as a potential successor to Konate.
Estève only arrived at Burnley last summer from Montpellier for £10.3 million and endured relegation in his first Premier League season. Yet he impressed enough in a struggling side to attract attention from Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, according to the same report.
Burnley, resigned to losing the Frenchman, are already plotting their own response and have lined up Middlesbrough captain Dael Fry as an ideal replacement at the heart of their defence.
So while Konate prepares to walk into a Real Madrid dressing room on superstar wages, Liverpool are left scouring a relegated back line for solutions. One defender moves towards the Bernabeu lights; another may be asked to step into his shadow at Anfield.
