Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Nobel Mendy

Hull City have torn up their transfer history to land highly rated defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back arrives on a five-year contract, with an option for a further year, in a move that eclipses the fee paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.

The club have not disclosed the exact figure, but confirmed it surpasses the £20m plus add-ons spent on Tzolakis. That instantly makes Mendy the most expensive signing in Hull’s history, smashing a record that had stood since 2016, when £13m was paid to Tottenham for midfielder Ryan Mason.

This is a statement buy.

Mendy, a Senegal international, spoke with the confidence of a player ready for the step up.

"I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well," he said. "I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

"I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it."

Born in France and developed at Paris FC, Mendy has moved quickly through European football. He scored twice in 28 appearances in his only La Liga season with Rayo Vallecano, showing he offers more than just defensive steel.

His final outing for the Spanish club came on a big stage: the Conference League final, where Rayo fell to Crystal Palace. The year before, he had already tasted that same showpiece with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

Two consecutive European finals. No winners’ medal yet, but plenty of experience.

On the international stage, Mendy’s rise has just begun. He earned his first cap for Senegal in March, featuring against The Gambia.

Hull have paid record money for a defender who sees the game from the back, wants the ball, and openly embraces the pressure of the Premier League. Now he has the platform he always wanted.
