Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Nobel Mendy

Hull City have ripped up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with the club holding an option for a further year, in a move that eclipses every fee Hull have ever paid.

The Tigers have not disclosed the price, but they confirmed it surpasses the £20m plus add-ons shelled out earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos. That deal itself had only just set a new benchmark, overtaking the £13m paid for Ryan Mason from Tottenham back in 2016.

Now Mendy sits at the top of that list.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” the Senegal international said after completing the move. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Mendy arrives with a growing reputation after a standout debut season in La Liga. He joined Rayo Vallecano last summer and went on to score twice in 28 appearances, anchoring their defence and pushing the Madrid club all the way to the brink of European glory.

His final outing for Rayo came on the biggest stage of their campaign: the Conference League final, where they fell short against Crystal Palace. It was the second successive year Mendy had reached that showpiece. The season before, he made the final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

The defender came through at Paris FC before moving to Spain, and his rise has already taken him onto the international scene. He won his first cap for Senegal in March in a match against The Gambia, a milestone that hinted a major club move would not be far behind.

Hull have now made that leap, betting heavily on a young defender who talks like a leader and plays on the front foot.

For a club rewriting its ambitions with back-to-back record signings, Mendy is not just another addition. He is the statement at the heart of a new era.
