Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Mendy from Rayo Vallecano
Hull City have ripped up their own transfer ceiling to land centre-back Mendy from Rayo Vallecano, sealing a club-record deal that underlines just how serious they are about staying in the Premier League.
The 21-year-old Senegal international has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with the Tigers holding an option to tack on a sixth season. It is a long-term bet on a defender they believe can anchor their return to the top flight.
Club officials have kept the exact numbers under wraps, but they have been clear on one point: this fee tops the record they set only weeks ago. That mark briefly belonged to Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who joined from Olympiacos for more than £20 million plus add-ons. Hull have gone bigger again.
For Mendy, the move ticks off a childhood dream.
“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” he told the club’s media after the deal was confirmed, his delight obvious. He described himself as “a very athletic player” and “a defender at heart”, stressing how much he relishes stepping out from the back with the ball, playing cleanly but not shying away from aggression when the moment demands it.
“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little,” he said. “So it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”
This is no raw project plucked from obscurity. Despite his age, Mendy arrives in East Yorkshire with a résumé most 21-year-olds can only envy. In his single La Liga campaign with Rayo Vallecano he made 28 appearances and chipped in with two goals, showing he can be a threat at the other end as well as a barrier at his own.
His European record is even more striking. Mendy has reached the final of the Conference League in each of the last two seasons. This year he went all the way with Rayo Vallecano before losing to Crystal Palace. The season before, he was part of the Real Betis squad that marched to the same showpiece, only to be beaten by Chelsea. Twice to London clubs. Twice to the brink of a trophy.
Those nights against English opposition have already given him a taste of Premier League standards. Hull are banking on that experience translating quickly when the real thing begins.
On the international front, his rise has not gone unnoticed either. Mendy made his senior debut for Senegal in March, winning his first cap for the Teranga Lions in a fixture against The Gambia. It was another marker of his status as one of West Africa’s most promising young defenders.
He now becomes Hull City’s eighth signing of a frantic summer window following promotion. The squad is being rebuilt with purpose, piece by piece, around players who can grow with the club at this level.
