Harvey Barnes Shines as Newcastle Edges West Brom in Carabao Cup

Harvey Barnes came off the bench to haunt his former club, firing a second-half brace as Newcastle United edged a wild Carabao Cup tie 3-2 against West Brom.

Isaac Price had given the visitors the perfect start with a superb free-kick, bending the ball beyond the reach of the Newcastle goalkeeper to stun St James’ Park. For a spell, the Baggies controlled the mood and the noise.

Newcastle needed a spark. It arrived through a debutant.

Four minutes later, Barnes struck against his former club, latching onto the chance that mattered most and burying it to restore Newcastle’s lead. No celebration, just a decisive finish and a roar from the stands. West Brom had no answer this time. Newcastle managed the closing stages and saw out their place in the third round.

The night began with a different kind of statement. Before kick-off, Newcastle unveiled new signing Nico González to the St James’ Park crowd, as Matthias Jaissle continued to reshape his squad in the final days of the transfer window.

By full-time, though, it was Barnes and Touré who had written their names across this cup tie, and Newcastle who marched on.
