Harry Kane Leads English Charge for 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or
Harry Kane will lead a powerful English charge for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or after being named on a star-studded 30-man shortlist that also features Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
The Bayern Munich striker has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite for the award, which will be handed out on 26 October at the London Palladium – the first time the ceremony has been staged in the English capital.
Kane’s case is compelling. He plundered 73 goals in 65 games for club and country across a season in which he added another Bundesliga title to his collection and captained England to World Cup bronze. Those numbers have put him at the front of the queue for a prize no Englishman has lifted since Michael Owen in 2001.
Standing in his way is a familiar cast of elite rivals. Reigning holder Ousmane Dembele is back among the nominees, joined by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe as part of a stacked field challenging the 33-year-old England captain.
The Premier League presence runs deep. Rice is one of several current top-flight names on the list, alongside Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Erling Haaland and William Saliba, all vying for a trophy that will be decided under the lights of the Palladium.
Lionel Messi’s name appears once more, a reminder of his enduring stature in the game, but Cristiano Ronaldo is a notable absentee from the 30-man selection.
Young stars and coaching elite recognised
Lamine Yamal does not just feature in the main Ballon d’Or conversation; he headlines the Men’s Young Talent of the Year shortlist, underlining his rapid rise. Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi is also nominated, a significant nod for the south-coast club.
Manchester City’s new arrival Ayyoub Bouaddi and recent Aston Villa signing Johan Manzambi join them on the list of emerging talents, while Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman is among the contenders for the women’s young player accolade.
On the touchline, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery are both shortlisted for Men’s Coach of the Year. They face competition from Spain boss Luis De La Fuente, as well as Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique. Arteta’s Arsenal also feature in the running for Men’s Club of the Year, recognition of the club’s broader resurgence.
Vozinha leads goalkeeper race after World Cup heroics
There is a strong African storyline in the goalkeeping category. Cape Verde’s Vozinha has been nominated for Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year on the back of his standout World Cup displays. He will go up against Arsenal’s David Raya and Emiliano Martinez, now of Chelsea, among others for the position’s top individual honour.
London takes centre stage for Ballon d’Or at 70
This edition marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, created by France Football and, since 2024, co-organised with UEFA. To mark the milestone, the ceremony has been moved from its traditional Paris home to London, in tribute to the award’s inaugural winner, England and Blackpool legend Stanley Matthews.
Seventy years on from Matthews’ triumph, England once again has a leading contender. If Kane finishes the job in October, the Ballon d’Or will return to English hands in the city where its story first truly began.
