Hamburg’s season is barely underway, and already they are reaching for the emergency glass. According to Sport BILD, David Alaba – Champions League winner, serial title collector, and one of the defining defenders of his generation – is being lined up for a shock return to Germany to rescue a defence in freefall.
The 34-year-old is a free agent after closing the book on a five-year stay at Real Madrid at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. That status changes everything. Because he is unattached, Hamburg could register him immediately, even with the transfer window shut, a loophole that suddenly looks like a lifeline for a side rooted to the bottom of the table.
This is not a routine squad tweak. This is a club in crisis looking for a statement.
Under Merlin Polzin, Hamburg have stumbled out of the blocks. They have lost all three league games, failed to score, and been humiliated twice by 5-0 defeats to Mainz and Leipzig. The back line has crumbled, the confidence has drained, and the Volksparkstadion has been left staring at another grim fight for survival. In that context, the idea of parachuting in Alaba – a player with 11 major trophies from Madrid alone, including two Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns in 131 appearances – carries obvious appeal.
His profile fits the need almost too perfectly. A left-footed organiser, comfortable at centre-back or full-back, still regarded as a leader and a standard-setter in elite dressing rooms. Even as injuries have bitten in recent seasons, the former Bayern Munich mainstay has kept himself on a strict regime of individual pitch sessions to preserve his fitness and touch. Hamburg see that experience and mentality as exactly what they lack: someone who has lived through title run-ins, not relegation scraps.
But romance meets reality quickly at the Volksparkstadion.
Sport BILD reports that Alaba’s wage demands could blow past Hamburg’s financial limits. The club’s hierarchy must weigh the short-term shock value of such a signing against a tight budget and the risk attached to a player with a recent history of fitness problems. The need is urgent; the decision cannot be reckless.
That is why another name has moved into sharper focus. Jannik Vestergaard, the experienced Denmark international, is viewed as a more realistic alternative. He would not bring the same global star power as Alaba, nor the same trophy-laden CV, but he offers size, aerial dominance, and Bundesliga know-how at a cost that may sit more comfortably with Hamburg’s accountants.
Hamburg are not alone in circling Alaba. Sport BILD notes that Lazio have been monitoring the situation from Serie A, while Mexican giants Club America have also joined the chase. For a player of his pedigree, the market will not stay quiet for long. Any hesitation, and Hamburg could watch their dream solution sign for someone else.
Time is not on Polzin’s side. Hamburg host FC Koln on matchday four of the Bundesliga on Saturday, September 19, the last fixture before the international break. After three straight defeats without a goal and those bruising 5-0 losses, this feels like an early-season crossroads. Another setback, and the atmosphere could turn toxic.
The schedule offers no mercy after the pause either. A trip to Hoffenheim on October 10 opens a daunting run of games that will test both the squad’s depth and its nerve. By then, Hamburg must have decided: do they stretch their finances to chase Alaba’s aura, pivot to a more attainable option like Vestergaard, or gamble on the current group finally holding its ground?
For a club already staring up from the foot of the table, the choice of who marshals their defence next may define the entire campaign.
