Georgia Stanway Joins Arsenal on Free Transfer
Georgia Stanway is set to join Arsenal on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the start of July, with only a medical standing between the England midfielder and a return to the WSL.
The 27-year-old will arrive in north London when her contract with the Frauen Bundesliga champions expires, ending a four-year spell in Germany that delivered four league titles and cemented her status among the elite in her position.
From Munich mainstay to Arsenal’s midfield project
Bayern confirmed in January that Stanway would leave at the end of her deal. They knew what they were losing. Across her time in Munich she became a driving force in midfield, a player trusted on the biggest stages and embraced by supporters who quickly took to her intensity and edge.
Bianca Rech, Bayern’s director of women’s football, spoke openly then about Stanway’s impact, praising her “commitment and character” and admitting she had “stolen our hearts”. The conversations about her future were frank: Stanway wanted a new challenge, and Bayern accepted it.
That challenge now lies with Arsenal, who have tracked her for several years. This is not a late scramble or an opportunistic move. The club identified her as a long-term target even before last summer’s Champions League final triumph, viewing her as central to a planned reshaping of their midfield and to a renewed push for a WSL title they have not lifted since 2019.
They are getting a player with heavyweight pedigree. Stanway has been at the core of England’s golden era, a key figure in back-to-back European Championship wins and the run to the 2023 World Cup final. Her numbers with the Lionesses underline that influence: 32 goals in 91 caps from central midfield, and performances that have placed her among the most respected operators in the game.
Before Bayern, she was a pillar of Manchester City’s side, growing from precocious talent into a leader. Germany added a different edge to her game; Arsenal now aim to benefit from the full package.
Reuteler deal close as rebuild gathers pace
Stanway is not the only significant midfield piece in motion. Arsenal are close to finalising another free transfer, with Géraldine Reuteler set to arrive after her departure from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Switzerland international, an attacking midfielder who can also operate across the front line, leaves Frankfurt with an impressive record: 54 goals and 45 assists in 184 appearances, including 10 goals this season alone. She was one of the standout performers for the host nation at last summer’s European Championship, a player comfortable carrying responsibility and dictating attacks.
Her profile dovetails with Arsenal’s need for creativity and end product between the lines, and her arrival alongside Stanway would signal a clear intent to refresh both the structure and the tempo of Jonas Eidevall’s side.
Big names out, big responsibility in
All of this comes against the backdrop of a sweeping summer reset. Arsenal have confirmed the exits of Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina and goalkeepers Manuela Zinsberger and Naomi Williams.
Those are not peripheral figures. Mead and McCabe, in particular, have been at the heart of Arsenal’s identity for years, on the pitch and in the dressing room. Letting that level of experience and personality walk out of the door is a bold move, one that places even greater weight on the shoulders of the new arrivals.
Stanway, used to pressure with England and Bayern, will be expected to step straight into that void, to set standards and shape a new core. Reuteler, if and when her deal is confirmed, will be asked to translate her Frankfurt influence to a league where the margins at the top are unforgiving.
Arsenal wanted a midfield evolution. With Stanway on the way and Reuteler close behind, they are committing to it. The question now is simple: will this new spine be strong enough to drag the WSL trophy back to north London for the first time in seven years?
