Barcelona's Gavi Declines Manchester United Transfer, Stays Focused on Camp Nou
Barcelona midfielder Gavi has turned down a chance to join Manchester United, dealing a setback to Michael Carrick’s summer plans. The Spanish star remains dedicated to Barcelona, where contract renewal talks are expected soon.
Midfield Target Falls Through for United
According to the Mirror, Manchester United faced disappointment after Gavi declined their approach. Carrick had earmarked the 22-year-old as a key addition to strengthen his midfield lineup ahead of the season, with the club reportedly ready to pay £35 million.
Gavi’s firm decision to stay at Barcelona frustrates United fans, especially after the club invested around £85 million in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Now, United must explore other options before the transfer window shuts.
Gavi’s Commitment to Barcelona
Having joined Barcelona’s academy at age 11, Gavi feels deeply rooted in the club. He has made 119 league appearances since his debut in 2021. He was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad last year, albeit unused during the final against Argentina.
Even with the recent signing of Rodri, Barcelona sees Gavi as vital to their future under coach Hansi Flick. Flick has helped him regain confidence following a knee injury that sidelined him for five months last season. Gavi aims to one day wear the captain’s armband at Camp Nou.
Gavi Reflects on Injury and Recovery
"I have suffered a lot, unfortunately, in these last two years. It's football," Gavi said. "They were serious injuries and you have to be mentally strong, and I have been. It's a strong point of mine. I'm at this level because of the mentality I have. It is not easy to play at this pace, coming from two serious injuries. I've done it and I'm proud. Luckily, the coach trusts me a lot. He's like a father to me. I am very grateful to him. It’s not easy to get to play after this injury. He knows about my talent and mentality and that it’s important for the team. He blindly trusts me."
Future Plans for Gavi and Manchester United
Barcelona intends to negotiate a new contract with Gavi soon to secure his long-term presence, despite his current deal running until 2030. Meanwhile, Manchester United must shift focus to other midfield candidates as the transfer deadline nears. They are also expected to prioritize adding a left-back to complete their summer signings.
