Galatasaray Reopens Talks for Rafael Leao Amid Price Drop
Galatasaray have reopened talks with Milan for Rafael Leao, sensing an opportunity as the forward’s price and options begin to narrow, but no formal bid has landed on the Rossoneri’s desk yet.
Reports from Italy and Turkiye align: the Turkish champions are back at the table, this time with more urgency. Milan, who initially wanted €50m plus €10m in add-ons, are understood to have softened their stance after failing to find anyone prepared to meet that figure.
That shift has dragged Leao’s situation back into the spotlight.
From Martinelli rejection to Leao push
Galatasaray’s renewed focus on Leao comes after a firm setback in London. Their €45m offer for Gabriel Martinelli was rejected by Arsenal, who not only turned down the bid but made it clear the Brazilian has no intention of moving to Istanbul.
With that door slammed shut, attention swung straight back to Milan’s Portuguese winger.
Italian outlet Sportitalia and Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu both report that Galatasaray are now engaged in “intensive” talks with Milan over Leao. The discussions remain at an advanced-contact stage rather than a concrete proposal, but the tone has changed: this is no longer a speculative enquiry.
A shrinking market for a big name
Milan have held conversations with Benfica, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray over the 27-year-old, yet none of those approaches progressed to written offers. The gap between Milan’s valuation and what those clubs were ready to pay was simply too wide.
Now the equation is different. With the asking price dropping to potentially under €50m plus bonuses, the move suddenly feels more realistic for Galatasaray and other suitors outside the traditional financial elite.
Leao and Milan had both expected that once his availability became clear, heavyweights from Europe’s top five leagues would circle. That wave of interest never came. No Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 or top-end Serie A side has stepped up with a decisive move.
So the market has shifted away from the stage Leao once imagined, and towards clubs ready to build a project around him rather than simply add another star.
Milan cornered by the contract clock
The power in this story now lies in the calendar. Leao’s contract at San Siro runs until June 2028, but there is no intention on his side to renew. Both club and player know it.
That reality pushes Milan towards a sale this summer. Delay too long and the leverage erodes; sell now and they can still command a significant fee while reshaping their attack.
Galatasaray, sensing that inevitability, are trying to move before someone else does. The talks are alive, the price is moving, and a player who once seemed destined only for Europe’s biggest stages may now be weighing a very different path.
If Milan do finally receive that written offer, the question will no longer be whether Leao leaves – but whether they can afford to say no.
