Galatasaray Revives Interest in Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte
Galatasaray are turning up the heat on a move for Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, with the Turkish champions ready to revive a deal that came close to completion in January.
The Uruguay international’s future at Old Trafford is increasingly fragile. Since Michael Carrick walked through the door, Ugarte has not started a single game. Kobbie Mainoo’s return has slammed that particular door shut even further, and the 24-year-old is no longer prepared to wait quietly in the background.
Carrick is understood to like Ugarte, to rate his qualities and his attitude. That has not translated into minutes. With Carrick the strong favourite to be handed the job on a permanent basis, the message to Ugarte is clear enough: his role will not suddenly expand.
For a player who left Paris Saint-Germain for around £50million and signed on big terms to be part of United’s midfield rebuild, the situation has shifted fast. United are now ready to reshape that midfield again and are open to sanctioning his departure, easing the wage bill and recouping funds in the process.
Galatasaray circle again
Galatasaray were close in January. Talks took place, the framework of a move to Istanbul was discussed, and the interest never cooled after the window shut. Now they are preparing another push ahead of the summer, sensing an opportunity they do not want to miss twice.
From Turkey’s side, the path looks relatively clear. United are willing sellers, Ugarte is pushing for consistent first-team football, and Galatasaray can offer him a central role in a side that expects to challenge for titles every season. At this stage, a switch to Istanbul is viewed as the most likely outcome.
Premier League and Juventus keep watch
That does not mean Galatasaray have a free run. Ugarte’s camp has started to test the market, and the response across Europe has been strong.
Juventus have tracked him for some time and remain in the conversation. In England, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham are all being kept “informed” on the situation and are monitoring developments rather than walking away.
- Each has its own midfield questions.
- Villa are open to bringing in a new central option, with Ross Barkley’s future uncertain.
- Newcastle could lose Sandro Tonali, who is open to a move away from St James’ Park, which would leave a sizeable gap in the heart of Eddie Howe’s side.
- Tottenham’s position is more precarious.
A grim Premier League campaign has dragged them into danger, and Roberto De Zerbi is expected to oversee a major rebuild if they stay up. Their ability to move for a player of Ugarte’s profile hinges on one blunt reality: they must avoid relegation. Only then can they realistically enter a bidding war.
For now, though, Galatasaray are better placed than anyone. They know the player, they know the numbers, and they came close once. They do not intend to let this chance slip again.
United’s midfield reset gathers pace
Ugarte’s situation feeds into a broader reset at Old Trafford. United are already pushing on other fronts, including a move for RB Leipzig talent Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old has lit up the Bundesliga this season, and United are among his admirers, but any deal would demand around €100million (£87.3m / $115.5m) and Liverpool currently lead that race.
Wayne Rooney, watching the transformation under Carrick, has made his stance clear. The club legend has warned INEOS it would be a major mistake not to hand Carrick the job permanently, insisting he “100%” deserves it.
If that happens, the picture becomes even starker for Ugarte. A manager locked in, a midfield pecking order already established, and a player of his age and pedigree unwilling to spend another season on the fringes.
All roads point to a summer break. The only real question now is whether Ugarte’s next chapter is written under the bright lights of the Premier League or in the fevered, unforgiving atmosphere of Istanbul.
