Gabriel Jesus Joins Barcelona for 10 Million Euros
Barcelona finally have their man. Not Julián Álvarez, as the club had chased all summer, but Gabriel Jesus — prised from Arsenal in a late twist for a fee of 10 million euros.
It is a deal that arrives almost out of nowhere. All signs from the Camp Nou corridors suggested the window would close without a new striker. Atlético de Madrid’s refusal to even sit down and talk about Álvarez had effectively shut that door. Then, at the last moment, Barça pivoted and moved for a forward who has been in their sights for nearly a decade.
A pursuit that started in Palmeiras
Gabriel Jesus is not a new name in Barcelona’s scouting files. The Catalan club first locked onto him in 2016, when he was exploding at Palmeiras and already catching the eye with the Brazilian national team.
Back then, Robert Fernández, Barça’s sporting director at the time, flew to Brazil to watch the teenager up close. He was not alone. Half of Europe had the same idea, and the race for his signature quickly turned into a scramble. The player, still a teenager, stood at a crossroads.
Barcelona tried to play one of their strongest cards: Neymar.
Both Neymar and Gabriel Jesus were part of the Brazil squad preparing for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. During that camp, the then-Barça star took it upon himself to sell the club and the city to his young compatriot, as Gabriel himself later recalled in an interview.
“Neymar told me about the city, that the climate was similar to Brazil, and it made me hesitate,” Gabriel Jesus admitted.
Neymar’s pitch, Guardiola’s call
The charm offensive was intense. Neymar spoke not only about football, but about life.
“It was a difficult moment when I had to choose a team. Neymar knows what it’s like to be young and have several European clubs want you. He told me about what Barcelona was like, about the city. And he told me the climate is similar to Brazil’s. He made me hesitate because Barça is also a great club, but I realized that I could go to another big club with more chances to play,” Gabriel Jesus said in an interview with The Sun.
That “other big club” was Manchester City.
The decisive factor was not the sun, the beach or the badge. It was Pep Guardiola on the other end of the phone. One call from the Catalan coach tilted the balance and pulled Gabriel Jesus to the Premier League, closing the door on Barcelona.
“I saw that City was really interested in me after speaking with Pep on the phone,” he explained.
From there, the story is well known: titles with City, a move to Arsenal, and now, finally, a ticket to Barcelona.
The destination Neymar once tried to sell him has at last become his new home — only this time, it was not a phone call that changed everything, but a last-minute opening in a chaotic market and a 10 million euro gamble from a club that simply refused to end the window empty-handed up front.
