Florian Wirtz Transfer Speculations: Bayern Munich's Stance
Bayern Munich have cooled talk of a dramatic Florian Wirtz reunion – for now – but the Liverpool playmaker’s future remains firmly under the microscope, with a potential blockbuster swap scenario still lurking in the background.
Bayern shut down ‘shock move’ talk
Liverpool beat Bayern Munich and Manchester City to Wirtz in the summer of 2025, paying around £116m to prise him from Bayer Leverkusen. It was a statement deal. The kind that comes with a heavy shirt and even heavier expectations.
Wirtz arrived as one of Europe’s most thrilling young attackers, the creative heartbeat of Leverkusen’s rise. At Anfield, the reality has been harsher. The Germany international has struggled to fully adapt to the Premier League’s intensity and physicality, and his form has been scrutinised almost from day one.
That dip opened the door to rumours of Bayern circling again, ready to capitalise if Liverpool’s patience snapped. But German reporter Christian Falk has moved to shut that down.
“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” he told CF Bayern Insider.
The links aren’t coming from nowhere. Bayern and Wirtz share a history. Falk revealed there were two secret meetings before the 21-year-old chose Liverpool – one in Munich, one on Merseyside – with Arne Slot ultimately convincing the playmaker to commit to the Reds.
That backstory guarantees constant noise, especially when his form is questioned. Yet Falk pushed back on the narrative that Wirtz is flopping.
“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he explained.
The context in Munich adds another twist. Jamal Musiala is still searching for peak rhythm after illness and last season’s injury problems, raising obvious questions about Bayern’s attacking midfield structure and long-term planning.
Swap deal talk lingers in the background
Falk insists there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz at this stage. No active pursuit. No concrete negotiations. But the door is not locked.
The idea of a swap involving Michael Olise has been floated, and while Falk stops short of endorsing it, he doesn’t dismiss it either.
“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two,” he said. “Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned.”
Right now, Bayern feel strong. The squad is deep. Musiala is tied down long term. Vincent Kompany is reshaping the side, with Olise being trialled as the central fulcrum – the same role he occupies for France.
That tactical shift gives Bayern options. It also complicates any immediate move for Wirtz, especially with Liverpool’s huge outlay still fresh.
“Don’t forget, either, that it was a lot of money Liverpool paid for Wirtz,” Falk reminded.
The Olise angle refuses to go away. The former Crystal Palace winger is a key piece in Kompany’s new system, and Bayern want him to sign a new deal. If he doesn’t, the dominoes could start to wobble.
“Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich,” Falk said.
From there, the possibilities widen. Wirtz’s versatility – able to operate wide or centrally – makes him an obvious fit for Bayern’s profile.
“This would be a very interesting thing, and if you make a swap deal with Liverpool or sell Olise for a lot of money to Real Madrid, you have the money to make an offer for Wirtz,” Falk added.
Nothing is imminent. Plenty would need to fall into place: Olise’s decision, Bayern’s internal hierarchy of targets, Liverpool’s stance on a player they invested so heavily in.
“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”
For now, the Wirtz-to-Bayern story pauses rather than ends. His performances at Liverpool, Olise’s contract call, and Bayern’s evolving system will decide whether this remains just transfer talk – or the prelude to one of the next window’s biggest moves.
