Erling Haaland and the Possibility of a Move to Barcelona or Real Madrid: Insights from Dietmar Hamann

Dietmar Hamann told GOAL there is “always a chance” that Erling Haaland could leave Manchester City if giants like Barcelona or Real Madrid come calling. Although no official offers have arrived yet, Haaland is contracted through to 2034, but the idea of seeking a fresh challenge beyond the Etihad Stadium is bound to surface eventually.

Record-Breaking Achievements

Haaland joined City in the summer of 2022, following his father Alf Inge’s footsteps. At the time, he was one of football’s most wanted talents, with Pep Guardiola securing his signature for £51 million ($69m). This fee now looks like a bargain considering his impact: a treble win of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, paired with an incredible 52-goal debut season.

Since then, Haaland has shattered records, reaching 100 top-flight goals in England at a remarkable pace. Despite signing long-term terms, there are no guarantees that the deal will run its full course.

Interest From Spain Lingers

Rumors about Spanish clubs chasing Haaland persist. By next summer, he will turn 27 after five seasons in Manchester. Could this be when he considers a new adventure at Camp Nou or Santiago Bernabeu?

"He’s won it all, hasn’t he? The Champions League, the Premier League," said Hamann when asked about Haaland’s potential move. "He’s signed a very long contract, but it’s natural to think about leaving once you’ve been at a club for some time. And since he’s born in England, thanks to his father playing in the Premier League, he might consider a change when Barcelona or Madrid come calling."

Hamann added that City’s decision will weigh heavily, noting the challenge of breaking the contract if City says no, especially given Haaland’s value.

Leadership Changes at Manchester City

Currently, Haaland is focused on helping City, now managed by Enzo Maresca after Guardiola's departure. With experienced players like Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, and Ilkay Gundogan having left, new leaders must emerge.

"When key figures leave, others have to step up," Hamann explained. "Ruben Dias remains a leader, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma brings experience despite his youth. Young talents like Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi show promise but need guidance, especially Bouaddi as he adapts to the Premier League."

Hamann believes Haaland must embrace a different role now, taking on more responsibility in the dressing room as the team transitions.

New Signings and Upcoming Matches

On transfer deadline day, City also secured Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million ($169 million), making him one of British football’s most expensive players. Fernandez, known for his combative style and leadership at Chelsea, will add strength to City's midfield.

City currently lead the Premier League table after winning their first two matches of the 2026-27 season. Their next fixture is at home against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City.
