England Gains Fitness Boost Ahead of World Cup Quarter-Final

England’s preparations for their World Cup quarter-final with Norway received a timely jolt of optimism in the Miami sun, with both Marc Guehi and Declan Rice returning to full training on the eve of the tie.

Guehi, who had been a major doubt after reports of a hamstring problem, moved freely in the session at Inter Miami’s training base, a sight that will have eased a few furrowed brows among the coaching staff. Rice, laid low by a stomach bug in the days after last weekend’s win over Mexico, also joined the main group and came through the workout.

For Thomas Tuchel, it was the kind of morning that can subtly shift a manager’s mood before a knockout game. Key pieces are sliding back into place.

Reece James was another welcome addition. The right-back, also on the comeback trail from a hamstring injury, took part with conviction and now looks on course to be available for selection against Norway. His presence offers England greater balance and attacking thrust down the flank, something they have missed at times in the tournament.

There was, though, one notable absentee. Jordan Henderson sat out as he begins his recovery from wrist surgery, the result of an awkward fall during the celebrations that followed England’s famous win at the Estadio Azteca. The midfielder remains with the squad in Miami in a supporting role, his influence now coming from the sidelines rather than the centre of the pitch.

If the medical bulletin brought encouragement, the conditions offered a reminder of the challenge ahead. England returned to Florida for the first time since their pre-tournament camp and were immediately hit by the full force of the climate: 33 degrees, the temperature rising further under a thick blanket of humidity.

Players wiped sweat from their faces between drills, coaches barked instructions in short bursts, and water breaks became as important as tactical tweaks. This is exactly what they had planned for. Up to now, England’s World Cup journey has taken them indoors twice and into rain for their other three matches. Miami is different. Miami is unforgiving.

The session, then, was not just about who could train, but how they coped in a setting designed to mirror what awaits them in the quarter-final. With Guehi and Rice back in the fold and James edging towards full availability, Tuchel’s options are strengthening at just the moment tournament football starts to bite.
