Edu Leaves Nottingham Forest Amid Power Reshuffle
Edu’s short and uneasy spell as Nottingham Forest’s global head of football is over, a little more than a year after he walked through the doors at the City Ground with a heavyweight reputation and a broad brief.
The former Arsenal midfielder, whose contract is believed to have been terminated, had not been seen at a Forest match since February. His absence told its own story. So did the whispers around the club that this departure was only a matter of time.
His role came under heavy scrutiny after a breakdown in relations with Nuno Espirito Santo, sacked last September and the first of four managers to pass through Forest last season. Nuno publicly hinted at internal friction and admitted his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had shifted. The fault lines behind the scenes were no longer hidden.
The pressure finally told. Edu, appointed in July 2025 with a remit that stretched beyond Nottingham to fellow Marinakis-owned clubs Olympiacos and Rio Ave, is now out. Forest are not expected to bring in a like-for-like replacement. Instead, chief football officer George Syrianos will absorb Edu’s responsibilities, tightening the decision-making circle around Marinakis.
It marks a sharp turn for a figure who arrived with serious clout. Edu spent six years at Arsenal, becoming the club’s first sporting director in 2022. As a player he had already written his name into their history, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups with the Gunners. From the boardroom, he played a central role in bringing Mikel Arteta to Emirates Stadium, a move that culminated in Arsenal’s first Premier League crown in 22 years last season.
Forest, though, never felt like the same fit. While Edu was supposed to help align the owner’s multi-club interests, the churn in the dugout and the internal tensions left his position exposed. The club’s chaotic season, with four different managers, only sharpened the focus on who actually held the power over football decisions.
His exit lands just days after another significant change upstairs. Former Olympiacos vice-president Theodore Giannikos was appointed Forest’s chief executive last week, replacing Lina Souloukou, who stepped down at the end of last season.
One senior figure out, another trusted Marinakis lieutenant in. The structure around the owner is tightening. The question now is simple: with Edu gone and Giannikos installed, what kind of Forest will emerge from this latest reshuffle?
