Ederson’s World Cup Call Delays Manchester United Move
Manchester United’s first signing of the Michael Carrick era is effectively in the bag – but they will have to wait to get him through the door.
Ederson, the Atalanta midfielder lined up for a £35 million switch to Old Trafford, has received a late call into Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a twist that threatens to nudge the timing of his move rather than derail it.
The 26-year-old was not in the original Selecao list. Then came the injury to Roma right-back Wesley, and Brazil turned to Ederson, a player they trust enough to drop straight into a tournament camp in North America.
He has three caps to his name, though none since 2025. That gap underlines how sharply his stock has risen in Bergamo, where his blend of aggression, positioning and tidiness on the ball has drawn admiring glances from across Europe – and, crucially, from Manchester.
United have an agreement in place with Atalanta for an initial £35m fee, with Ederson earmarked as the anchoring presence in midfield after Casemiro’s exit. For Carrick, a former master of the role himself, it is a defining first move as permanent manager: a statement that United intend to rebuild the spine of their side with younger, more mobile legs.
The club had hoped to wrap up the formalities swiftly. The plan now shifts slightly. The deal is expected to be confirmed, but Ederson will not report for pre-season at Carrington until his World Cup commitments are over.
His inclusion means United’s presence at the tournament swells again. The club already have 12 players at the 2026 World Cup; once the transfer is signed off, Ederson will become the 13th.
For United, that number tells its own story. The squad is being reshaped, the profile is changing, and Carrick’s first recruit will step into Old Trafford already battle-tested on the biggest stage football can offer. The only question left is how quickly he can turn World Cup rhythm into Premier League authority.
