World Cup bounce, club uncertainty
Spence’s stock has never been higher. His World Cup campaign put him firmly on the international stage, his performances in Qatar earning widespread praise and sharpening interest across Europe. He now wants that momentum to count for something tangible: guaranteed minutes, a starting role, a clear place in a project.
He does not have that at Spurs.
Roberto De Zerbi admires him, but admiration does not equate to opportunity. The Tottenham head coach cannot promise Spence the game time he craves and has made it clear he will not block a move if the 26-year-old decides to go. For a player entering what should be his peak years, that honesty cuts both ways.
Blocked by Porro
The problem is obvious. Pedro Porro, a World Cup winner and now firmly entrenched at right-back, signed a new long-term deal in June and sits ahead of Spence in the hierarchy. As long as Porro is fit, he starts.
Spence can operate on the left, but that is not where he wants to build his career. Right-back is his position, and he believes his World Cup displays have earned him the right to compete for that role on a weekly basis, not as an occasional stand-in.
De Zerbi understands that ambition. He knows Spence does not want to drift through his mid-to-late twenties as a squad option, especially after shining on the biggest stage.
A deal that suits everyone
In an ideal scenario, Spurs would not be entertaining offers at all. Barely a month has passed since Spence drew plaudits for his performance in England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. Selling a player off the back of that kind of exposure is rarely the first choice.
But the reality at Tottenham is shifting. The club are actively trying to maximise player sales and reshape the squad. With Spence pushing for regular football and Inter Milan searching for a direct replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Real Madrid, the pieces line up neatly.
Spurs also dodge the awkward optics of strengthening a domestic rival. Liverpool registered tentative interest, but a move to Anfield would have meant empowering a direct Premier League competitor. Inter offer a cleaner solution.
Price, value and a new Spurs stance
The suggested £25.6m fee feels on the low side for a player whose reputation is soaring after the World Cup. Yet the market has not erupted around him. Without a bidding war, Spurs know they cannot simply name their price for someone who, for all his talent, has struggled to deliver consistent top-level performances across his time at the club.
That realism marks a notable shift. Tottenham have long been criticised for failing to extract proper value when selling players. Offloading Spence at a sensible fee, at the right time for both club and player, would underline a more pragmatic, market-aware approach.
Whether Spurs move for a replacement remains uncertain. De Zerbi has already made clear that the club are not finished in this transfer window, but there is no guarantee another right-back will arrive.
What is clear is that Djed Spence stands at a crossroads: a World Cup springboard behind him, Inter Milan calling, and a Tottenham side finally willing to cash in rather than cling on.
