Djed Spence Joins Inter Milan in €35m Transfer
Djed Spence touched down in Milan late on Thursday night, the final pieces of his high-profile move from Tottenham to Inter now falling into place.
The 26-year-old defender arrived at the airport to a small but vocal welcome from local media and supporters, with cameras tracking his every step as he made his way through the terminal. On Friday, he is due to undergo his medical with the Serie A club, the last formal step before Inter present him at San Siro.
Big fee, bigger statement
Inter and Spurs have already thrashed out the numbers. The agreement is worth an initial €31.5 million (£27m), a fee that underlines how highly the Italian side rate the England international after his summer exploits.
Built into that package are performance-related bonuses that could push the total outlay to around €35m (£30m). Tottenham have also ensured the door stays slightly open on Spence’s future by inserting a 10 per cent sell-on clause into the deal.
Personal terms were never an obstacle. Spence is understood to have agreed his contract with Inter without any real complication, a clear sign he was ready to draw a line under an unpredictable four-year spell in north London.
World Cup springboard
This transfer is the payoff from a summer that changed Spence’s career trajectory. At the 2026 World Cup, he emerged as one of England’s standout performers, featuring heavily as the Three Lions battled their way to the third-place play-off against France.
Those performances did not just enhance his reputation; they forced Inter’s hand. The club had been scouring the market for a marquee replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who left for Real Madrid in early July. Spence’s mix of power, versatility and big-tournament composure convinced the Nerazzurri he was the right fit.
Blocked at Spurs
For Tottenham, this is the end of a complicated chapter. Spence leaves having made 85 senior appearances and with a Europa League winners’ medal to show for his time at the club, but his route to regular minutes had all but disappeared.
Pedro Porro has recently signed a lucrative new contract to cement his status as first-choice right-back, while Andy Robertson has arrived to add elite depth on the left side. With both flanks effectively locked down, Spence was staring at another season of fighting for scraps.
New head coach Roberto De Zerbi did not stand in his way. With the club reshaping its squad after a chaotic campaign, he gave the green light for a permanent exit.
That chaos was very real. Spence featured 44 times in a grim season where Tottenham only secured their Premier League survival on the final day. The sense of a cycle ending at Spurs has been growing; Spence’s departure feels like part of that reset.
Second shot at Serie A
All that now separates Spence from becoming an Inter player are Friday’s medical tests. Once those are completed, he is expected to move quickly into pre-season preparations and immerse himself in Simone Inzaghi’s demanding system ahead of the new Serie A campaign.
Italy will not be new ground. Spence previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024, a spell that gave him a first-hand education in the tactical detail and defensive discipline expected in Serie A. Inter are banking on a more mature, World Cup-hardened version of that player.
From a turbulent survival scrap in north London to the pressure of chasing titles at San Siro, Spence’s career is about to change gear. The only question now is how fast he can turn World Cup promise into week-in, week-out dominance in Inter’s famous colours.
