Derby County Signs Alex Mowatt from West Bromwich Albion
Derby County have finally landed their man, completing the permanent signing of Alex Mowatt from West Bromwich Albion after a long pursuit of the midfielder.
The 29-year-old has agreed a two-year deal at Pride Park for an undisclosed fee, having passed a medical and wrapped up the paperwork today. While figures of around £2 million had been suggested in the West Midlands, DerbyshireLive understands the fee is closer to £600,000, with Mowatt having entered the final year of his contract at the Hawthorns.
Long-term target finally arrives
This is not a deal done on a whim. Head coach John Eustace has tracked Mowatt for some time and wanted him in last summer, only for the midfielder to instead sign a two-year contract extension with West Brom. Derby never backed off, keeping a close eye on his situation and moving decisively once the opportunity opened up.
The attraction is obvious. Mowatt brings a wealth of Championship experience and a proven ability to knit play together from the base of midfield. His passing range and composure in deeper areas are understood to be central to why Derby pushed so hard to get this over the line.
Proven pedigree in the second tier
Born in Doncaster, Mowatt has spent the last five years at the Hawthorns and has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham and playing 73 minutes before being replaced by Conor Townsend.
His journey began at Leeds United, where he came through the academy and broke into the first team before moving to Barnsley. At Oakwell he became a key figure, captaining the Tykes to the Championship play-offs in 2021 and racking up more than 140 appearances.
A loan spell at Oxford United followed, and then a free transfer to West Brom under Valerien Ismaël. On signing him, Ismaël made no secret of his admiration, describing Mowatt as “an outstanding midfield player” with a strong mentality, a threat from distance, and real danger from set-pieces, as well as a relentless work rate.
Mowatt also spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them finish fourth in the Championship, and has represented England at under-19 and under-20 level.
Derby now inherit that CV and that engine. The question is simple: how far can Mowatt’s nous and left foot drive their push up the table?
