Dante Returns as Bayern U23 Coach: Champions League Winner Takes Charge
A familiar face is heading back to Säbener Straße – this time with a clipboard instead of a captain’s armband.
Dante, the charismatic centre-back who helped anchor FC Bayern’s treble-winning side under Jupp Heynckes, is set to begin his coaching career in Munich by taking charge of the club’s U23s this summer, according to consistent media reports. The 42-year-old, still under contract with Ligue 1 side OGC Nice, will move from the pitch to the touchline and step straight into a decisive role in Bayern’s talent factory.
Between 2012 and 2015, Dante made 133 competitive appearances for Bayern, collecting three Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokals and the Champions League. Now he returns to oversee the club’s next generation, charged with shaping players who are expected not just to reach the first team, but to be good enough to stay there.
Keyhanfar joins the project
Dante will not be alone. Alongside him, Bayern are bringing in an emerging coaching mind in Erdem Keyhanfar, a name better known in specialist circles than on the big stage, but one with a sharp, modern résumé.
Keyhanfar played until 2019, climbing as high as the Oberliga, yet had already started coaching before his playing days ended. His path since then has been relentless. Via SV Gonsenheim and Mainz 05’s U19s, he earned a move to Austria in 2020, joining FC Liefering – Red Bull Salzburg’s reserve side and one of Europe’s most productive development platforms.
From there, he returned to Mainz to work under Bo Svensson, embedding himself in a Bundesliga environment built on pressing, structure and detail. He also spent several months at Union Berlin, another club that has punched above its weight with clear tactical identity. At one point, he even shadowed Jürgen Klopp, gaining a close-up look at one of the most influential coaches of his generation.
Since the end of 2024, Keyhanfar has been out of work. That pause now looks less like a gap and more like a deep breath before a major step: a role in Bayern’s youth setup, forming a partnership with Dante that blends elite playing experience with intensive coaching education.
Seitz moves upstairs after long service
The shake-up means the end of an era on the U23 bench. Holger Seitz, 51, who has guided Bayern’s second team for most of the period since 2020, is stepping aside and moving into a new role within the club.
Seitz’s fingerprints are all over Bayern’s development pathway. He previously led the second team to the Regionalliga title in 2018/19, a season that underlined how effectively Bayern could dominate at that level while still prioritising player growth over pure results. His shift into a different position signals continuity behind the scenes, even as the dugout gets a new look.
A bold blend of experience and ideas
For Bayern, this is a calculated move. Dante brings the authority of a Champions League winner who understands the pressure, the expectations and the standards in Munich. Keyhanfar arrives with the methods and modern training concepts forged in Mainz, Salzburg’s network and Union Berlin.
The combination will define how Bayern’s U23s play, develop and compete in the coming years. The question now is simple and sharp: which of their young charges will be the first to follow Dante’s path from the reserves to the big nights at the Allianz Arena?
