Danilo's Last Year at Flamengo: A Farewell Mission

Danilo has set a clear finish line for his career – and he wants it painted red and black.

The veteran defender, speaking at Flamengo’s Ninho do Urubu training ground, revealed he finally has the headspace to sort out what he calls the “last year” of his life as a professional footballer, and he hopes it comes in 2027 with the club of his heart.

In recent seasons, his energy has been pulled elsewhere.

“In 2026, I had very little time to reflect and assess; there was a World Cup in between, and at 35 years old, I had to dedicate myself immensely physically to measure up and be well prepared,” Danilo said, explaining how international duty had consumed him before any serious sit-down with Flamengo’s hierarchy.

Now, with the World Cup behind him and his body still responding, the conversation has changed. The talks with the club have moved from hypothetical to concrete.

“Now is when I've had more peace of mind to think about it. Flamengo and I have been talking, and I hope 2027 is the year we can be together so I can play the final year of my career.”

The former Real Madrid and Manchester City full-back made it clear there has been no drama behind the scenes, no brinkmanship, no stand-off. Just alignment.

He described the renewal discussions as calm and constructive, stressing that both parties are pulling in the same direction and that nothing significant stands in the way of an agreement.

“We have spoken very calmly. Both sides share the desire to move forward, to put together another beautiful year, and a year where I can truly say ‘this is the last year of my career’ and finish at the club of my heart, in a project I believed in and that has been working,” he said.

For Danilo, this is about more than one last contract. It is about closing the circle where it began, with Flamengo, and doing it on his terms – still competing, still relevant, still chasing silverware.

“I don't think there are any obstacles preventing this from happening, and hopefully in 2027 we can be together, finish my career at Flamengo, and, God willing, win a major trophy – that would be wonderful.”

One final year. One last push for a major title. If Flamengo get this deal over the line, they won’t just be signing experience – they’ll be signing a farewell mission.
