Dan Burn Named Permanent Captain of Newcastle United
Dan Burn’s rise from the stands at St James’ Park to the armband is complete.
Newcastle’s new head coach Matthias Jaissle has confirmed the 32-year-old defender as the club’s permanent captain, filling the void left this summer by the departure of Bruno Guimaraes.
For Burn, a boyhood Newcastle fan who has racked up 193 appearances since arriving in 2021, the news cuts deeper than a routine dressing-room announcement.
“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” he said after the decision was made public. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.”
Burn has been at the heart of Newcastle’s recent resurgence, a constant presence through European qualification, cup runs and a dramatic shift in expectations on Tyneside.
“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments,” he reflected. “I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”
Jaissle, only just through the door himself, has wasted no time nailing down his dressing-room figurehead.
“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” the German said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.
“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself. Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”
Newcastle now move into a new era with a local lad wearing the armband, carrying both the weight of the shirt and the expectations of a city that knows exactly who is leading them out.
