Crystal Palace Turns to Pierre Sage Amid Iraola Chase Stalling

Crystal Palace’s managerial search has taken a sharp turn, with Lens boss Pierre Sage now moving into focus as talks are expected in the early part of this week.

Palace had pushed hard for Andoni Iraola, making the Bournemouth head coach their clear first choice to succeed Oliver Glasner. The club’s hierarchy believed he was the man to lead the next phase at Selhurst Park and were prepared to build their plans around him.

That pursuit is now on the brink of collapse. Iraola is set to begin formal talks with Liverpool in the coming days, with the Conference League winners moving quickly after sacking Arne Slot on Saturday. Palace had made a firm proposal to the Spaniard, but the pull of Anfield looks set to take him out of their reach.

So the search widens.

Chairman Steve Parish and his board are determined not to be bounced into a panic appointment. The message from the club is clear: the process will be thorough, the shortlist broad, the decision measured. Behind the scenes, a number of names are being weighed up.

Among them, Pierre Sage has emerged as a serious contender. At 47, the Lens head coach is building a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest coaching minds, his work catching the eye well beyond France. He is understood to be open to the idea of moving to south London, and crucially, he is ready to talk now.

BBC Sport first revealed Palace’s initial interest in Sage on 8 May, though at that stage all energy remained fixed on trying to prise Iraola away from Bournemouth. With that avenue now closing, the Frenchman’s candidacy has moved quickly up the agenda.

Sage is expected to meet Palace officials in the coming days, a key step in a search that has already shifted once and may yet twist again. For Parish and Palace, the next conversation could shape the club’s direction for years, not just the coming season.
