Crystal Palace Faces Tough Challenge Against Manchester City

Crystal Palace could hardly have scripted a worse opening away to Everton. Sluggish, second best, and with their rhythm nowhere to be seen, they looked like a side still working out what this season is supposed to be.

The backdrop does not help. Liverpool are circling Ismaila Sarr, and the sense of unease is obvious. Palace know the one unforgivable mistake before the window shuts: they cannot strip out their best players and expect to survive the grind of a Premier League campaign. Lose Sarr now and the whole project starts to look fragile.

Even so, there is a hint of optimism. There is a goal in this team. The raw materials are there – pace on the break, enough craft between the lines – but they need a performance that proves it.

City clunky, but still ruthless

On the other side of the fixture, Manchester City’s win over Bournemouth felt inevitable, even if it never quite clicked into the usual slick machine.

They deserved the points, no question, yet there was an awkward edge to them. Mark Guehi stepping into midfield gave the system a slightly clunky feel, the kind that might make Mateo Kovacic wonder how quickly the landscape has shifted around him.

Now comes the next tweak: Ayyoub Bouaddi. The youngster brings energy and intrigue, but he will need time, minutes, and patience to adapt to the demands of a Guardiola side. City are evolving on the fly, even as they keep racking up results.

Haaland’s response

Erling Haaland’s blank last weekend felt like an anomaly, not a trend. Strikers of his type do not stay quiet for long. City may not be at full fluency yet, but when Haaland has a point to prove, defences usually pay for it.

That is the threat facing Palace. City are not likely to stroll through this; Palace have enough in attack to land a punch and make it a contest. The champions, though, usually find a way.
