Cristiano Ronaldo Approaches 1,000 Goals with Al Nassr Victory
Cristiano Ronaldo moved to within touching distance of an astonishing four-figure landmark on Friday night, dragging Al Nassr to a 2-1 win over Al Taawoun and pushing his career tally to 978 goals. Twenty-two more, and he hits 1,000.
The 39-year-old decided the contest in the 50th minute, drifting into the box and delivering the kind of ruthless finish that has defined two decades at the top. It was the decisive strike, the one that settled a tense game and rewrote Al Nassr’s record books in the process.
Records fall, numbers soar
Ronaldo lasted 80 minutes, posted an xG of 1.08 and completed 90% of his passes, but the headline number came with that single swing of his boot. The goal made him Al Nassr’s all-time leading scorer in the Saudi Pro League era, taking him to 104 league goals and nudging him past Mohammad Al Sahlawi’s mark of 103.
He is not done with Sahlawi yet. Across all competitions, Ronaldo’s latest effort pulled him level on 131 goals for the club, joint-second in Al Nassr history. Only Majed Abdullah, out in front on 259, sits above him now.
The milestones dropped into a match that had started awkwardly for the league leaders. Bassam Al Hurayji struck in the 11th minute to give Al Taawoun a shock lead and briefly hush the away support. Al Nassr probed, pushed, and finally found a way through deep into first-half stoppage time, when Samuel Costa levelled in the 45'+5 to reset the contest right on the interval.
The equaliser changed the mood. Ronaldo finished the job.
A streak that won’t stop
His winner did more than secure three points. It stretched Al Nassr’s extraordinary scoring run to 91 consecutive matches in all competitions. That sequence is now the second-longest goalscoring streak in football history and the longest active run in Saudi Arabian football.
Six more games with at least one goal, and they will own the world record outright.
Ronaldo remains the heartbeat of that attacking machine. He has now been directly involved in 155 goals in 150 appearances for Al Nassr, a relentless output that underpins the club’s current dominance.
The table reflects it. Four games, four wins, 12 points. Al Nassr sit alone at the top, perfect and purring. Al Taawoun, beaten and bruised, are marooned in 15th with just two points to show for their efforts.
Fire, fury and a perfect start
This surge comes on the back of a chaotic 3-2 comeback against Al Ettifaq in the previous round, a night that laid bare both Ronaldo’s temper and Al Nassr’s resilience.
Trailing 2-0 at half-time, manager Ange Postecoglou made a huge call: he substituted his captain at the break. Ronaldo’s reaction was raw and public — arms thrown in the air, the captain’s armband dropped on the pitch, frustration written across his face as he left the stage earlier than expected.
The gamble worked. Sadio Mané took over, scoring twice in the second half to complete a dramatic turnaround and preserve Al Nassr’s perfect start. Postecoglou later stood squarely behind his star forward, describing Ronaldo as “passionate about football and passionate about Al-Nassr,” aligning that fiery edge with the squad’s collective drive.
Now, with the armband back on and the goals still flowing, Ronaldo has turned that frustration into fuel. The team sits top of the league, the scoring streak marches towards history, and the greatest individual target of all looms into view.
