Cristian Orozco Impresses at Manchester United's Under-21s

Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United what they have on their hands.

The Colombian midfielder, finally able to complete his move from Fortaleza after turning 18 earlier this summer, has marked his early days at the club with a goal for the Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.

United’s youngsters ran riot in a 5-0 win as preparations ramped up for the new campaign, and Orozco joined the party. The defensive midfielder found the net in the rout, offering an early glimpse of his timing and composure in the final third.

He was far from the only one making an impression. Chido Obi, who struck twice in a recent win over Ipswich, kept his hot streak going against Villa’s academy side. Ashton Missin also helped himself to a brace, while Amir Ibragimov added his name to the scoresheet as Villa’s prospects were swept aside.

United secured Orozco’s signature last year after a determined push from director of football Jason Wilcox, who has been driving an aggressive strategy to recruit top overseas talent. The club lured the Colombia Under-17s captain from his homeland despite his limited senior experience — he had made just five first-team appearances for Fortaleza before the move.

His last competitive outing before crossing the Atlantic came in May, in a Copa Colombia draw against Cucuta Deportivo. Now the focus is on his adaptation rather than acceleration.

United have mapped out a patient pathway for the teenager. The plan is clear: let him grow in the academy and Under-21 environment instead of throwing him straight into the first-team spotlight.

That caution is underlined by the club’s heavy investment in more established midfield options. Old Trafford chief Michael Carrick has already moved decisively in the market, bringing in Andrey Santos to bolster the centre of the pitch. Youri Tielemans followed soon after, with United activating the £35 million release clause in his Aston Villa contract.

Those arrivals crowd the route to the senior side, but they also buy Orozco time. Time to adjust. Time to learn. Time to turn that first Under-21 goal into the foundation of something bigger.

For now, patience will be his toughest opponent. His chance in a Red Devils shirt will come. The question is how ready he’ll be when it does.
