Colombia Advances to Last-16 After Narrow Victory Over Ghana
Colombia did it the hard way. Wasteful in front of goal but ruthless when it mattered, they squeezed past a blunt Ghana side 1-0 at Arrowhead Stadium to claim the final ticket to the World Cup last 16.
The scoreline flatters Ghana. The contest did not.
Colombia bossed the ball, the territory, and almost all of the chances. In the end, all they had to show for it was Jhon Arias’s early strike, a goal that settled the nerves and ultimately settled the group.
Early scare, early strike
The night began with a jolt. Within the opening minute, Thomas Partey stepped into space and ripped a low shot just wide of the post. For a brief moment, Ghana’s bench was on its feet, sensing an upset brewing.
That was as good as it got for them.
Colombia responded with control. They tightened the press, pinned Ghana back, and moved the ball with the assurance of a side that knew exactly what was at stake. The pressure told quickly. Arias found the breakthrough, finishing off Colombia’s early dominance and giving the South Americans a lead they never looked likely to surrender.
Injuries disrupt the rhythm
The game’s flow fractured almost as soon as Colombia took charge. Jhon Cordoba pulled up with what looked like a groin problem and was forced off, Luis Suarez thrown into the action earlier than planned.
Ghana suffered their own setback minutes later. Marvin Senaya went down and could not continue, with Alidu Seidu summoned from the bench. Two enforced changes before the break, two game plans rewritten on the fly.
Colombia adjust, Ghana fade
Colombia handled the disruption better. They kept the ball, kept probing, and kept Ghana at arm’s length. The African side, bright in that opening minute, gradually faded into a team without a cutting edge, reduced to half-chances and hopeful breaks that never quite developed.
Colombia, by contrast, created enough to kill the game off long before the final whistle. Their finishing never matched their build-up play, leaving Arias’s goal to carry the weight of the occasion.
It was enough.
Next stop: Vancouver
The win sends Colombia through to a last-16 meeting with Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, a test of whether this dominance can be turned into something more clinical on the tournament’s sharper edge.
They will not get away with being this wasteful forever. But they are still standing, still swinging, and still very much alive in the World Cup.
