Cody Gakpo Transfer Update: Tottenham vs Manchester City
Cody Gakpo has become the latest flashpoint in a late-summer tug of war between two Premier League heavyweights – and one very determined challenger.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have now stepped directly into the race for the Liverpool forward, holding a face-to-face meeting with Gakpo’s representatives as they explore a deal before the window shuts.
Spurs’ long-standing move – but no transfer request
Tottenham, though, were there first.
Romano revealed that Spurs have had a verbal agreement in place with Gakpo over personal terms since July. The framework of a contract is understood to be settled from Tottenham’s side, leaving only an agreement between clubs missing from the equation.
Crucially, that understanding with Spurs does not mean Gakpo is pushing to leave Anfield. Romano stressed that the Dutchman is “very happy” at Liverpool. For Tottenham, the move is essentially pre-packaged: if Liverpool accept a bid, the financial side of Gakpo’s deal is ready to go.
Manchester City arrive at the table
City have now disrupted that plan.
Romano says the champions have “made direct contact and held a meeting” with Gakpo’s camp and already started talking through potential contract figures. It is a clear signal: City are prepared to go head-to-head with Tottenham for the 25-year-old.
The move underlines City’s intent to refresh their attacking options again, even this late in the window, and turns what looked like a one-club pursuit into a full Premier League battle.
Liverpool’s hard line: no exit without two wingers
There is one major obstacle for both suitors. Liverpool.
Romano was clear that the Reds will not give the green light to any Gakpo departure in the final days of the window unless they first bring in two wingers. No exceptions, no discounts for timing.
Liverpool’s recruitment plan is already in motion. Bradley Barcola is described as the “top priority”, with that deal “still fully on”. On top of that, the club are working on a second wide option.
Talks have been held over two offers for Iyenoma Mudryk, with discussions ongoing with the player’s agent. Other alternatives are also on the table as Liverpool try to build a safety net before making any decision on Gakpo.
So the picture is clear. Tottenham have the personal terms laid out. Manchester City have arrived late but aggressively. Liverpool hold the final say – and that will only change if two new wingers walk through the door at Anfield before the window slams shut.
