Christos Tzolis: Arsenal's New Winger Making Waves
Arsenal’s new winger Christos Tzolis has barely unpacked in north London, but the noise around him is already deafening – and much of it is coming from inside the club.
The 24-year-old Greece international arrived at the Emirates Stadium in July in a £34m move from Club Brugge, a deal driven by Mikel Arteta after he sanctioned the departure of Leandro Trossard and put Gabriel Martinelli up for sale. It was a bold reshaping of his forward line. Tzolis was the statement piece.
So far, it looks inspired. The Premier League champions have opened their title defence with four wins from four, and Tzolis has slotted straight into the tempo and demands of Arteta’s side ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Napoli.
Inside Arsenal, they are not hiding their delight.
Sporting director Andrea Berta made his stance clear the moment the deal was done, backing the Greek winger to “raise the technical level of our squad” and bring a “strong mentality to our team”. That was the internal pitch. The early weeks of the season have only strengthened it.
The admiration spilled into public view in Monaco at last month’s Champions League draw. Club Brugge president Bart Verhaeghe bumped into Arsenal officials and quickly realised just how highly they rate their new signing.
“At the Champions League draw, I saw people from Arsenal and they showed a tremendous amount of respect,” Verhaeghe told Het Belang van Limburg. “ ‘What a player you’ve delivered,’ they told me. They said he has an excellent attitude, is the best in the physical tests and is a great guy, too.”
The praise did not stop there. Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Verhaeghe revealed that Arsenal staff were stunned by how ready-made Tzolis looked from day one.
“Arsenal said ‘what a player’ when they approached me after the draw,” he said. “Christos had come out on top in all the tests. That’s what we do here: deliver a ready-made product. Because we know what those top teams are looking for. We prepare our players for that kind of football.
“Back then, people laughed at our holistic approach to nutrition, sleep, special glasses… Today, it’s all standard practice. We were the innovators from day one, and we’ll keep innovating.
“Today, we’re selling players to Arsenal and Inter Milan, two teams that have reached the Champions League final in the last two years. And at the same time, we’re recruiting directly from the Premier League, from a club like West Ham. Ten years ago, that was unthinkable.”
The numbers from Arsenal’s pre-season testing back up the hype. Ben White lifted the lid on what the squad saw when Tzolis walked through the door.
“Christos has been amazing,” the England defender said last month. “He came in, did all the testing, and beat everyone. So he is fitting in really well and everyone is really happy for him to be here.”
When a new signing blows away the internal metrics, people notice. When he backs that up on the pitch for the reigning champions, the wider game starts to talk.
Rio Ferdinand has already nailed his colours to the mast. On his YouTube channel, the former Manchester United defender tipped Tzolis as the standout arrival of the window.
“Who is the best signing of the transfer window? From what I’ve seen so far, I’m going to go for Tzolis,” Ferdinand said. “For the price you got him for, £35m, from what I’ve seen, jinky little winger, great vision, making good decisions in the final third.
“I think, great bit of business done by the recruitment team at Arsenal. I’m going to go early, I’m going to say he’s going to be my signing of the season, as in terms of value, and in terms of what he does.”
From Brugge’s labs to Arsenal’s training ground, the same story keeps surfacing: elite physical data, sharp decision-making, and a mentality that has impressed everyone from executives to senior pros.
Now comes the real examination. With Napoli looming and a Champions League campaign opening under the floodlights, Tzolis steps onto the stage Arsenal bought him for.
