Fofana Era Ends Quietly

For David Datro Fofana, the Chelsea chapter is over almost as soon as it began.

Servette FC have agreed a permanent deal to sign the 23-year-old forward from Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Swiss side will pay a €2.5 million fee plus €1 million in add-ons, drawing a line under a move that never truly caught fire at Stamford Bridge.

“Servette FC have completed deal to sign David Datro Fofana from Chelsea on a permanent move,” Romano reported on August 28. “€2.5m fee plus €1m add-ons. It’s over between cfc and Fofana.”

Fofana had signed a seven-year contract worth $10.9 million, running through 2028, when he arrived from Molde in January 2023 for a fee in excess of £10 million. He never came close to justifying that investment.

As The Athletic’s Simon Johnson noted, Fofana made only four first-team appearances for Chelsea. The club repeatedly sent him out on loan — Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and Strasbourg — five temporary moves in three years that underlined his status on the fringes.

By this summer, Chelsea had earmarked him for a permanent exit. Now it’s done.

Martinez Arrival Raises Stakes in Goal

While one door closes up front, another swings open at the back.

Chelsea have secured Argentina’s World Cup–winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa, a major move that immediately throws Robert Sanchez’s future into doubt.

“Emiliano Martínez, in London today for medical tests and then contract signing at Chelsea,” Romano posted on August 28. “Deal valid until June 2028 with option for further season.”

Martinez arrives as a clear statement: Chelsea want a commanding, seasoned presence in goal as they reshape the spine of the team. For Sanchez, signed to be the No 1 not long ago, the message is blunt. His grip on the shirt has loosened overnight.

Midfield Target: Lamine Camara Talks Ongoing

Chelsea’s recruitment drive is not stopping at the back.

The club have held talks with AS Monaco over midfielder Lamine Camara as they look to reinforce Xabi Alonso’s options before the September 1 deadline. Meetings have taken place, but Monaco are still fighting to keep the player.

“Chelsea and AS Monaco had a meeting on Thursday to discuss Lamine Camara as possible option for CFC midfield,” Romano reported on August 28. “AS Monaco still hope to keep Camara but remain in talks for Pape Matar Sarr from Spurs, as reported.”

The clock is ticking. Chelsea’s interest is firm, Monaco’s stance is resistant, and the market closes on Tuesday. Something has to give.

One of the Window’s Relentless Movers

Across the Premier League, few clubs have been as aggressive as Chelsea in reshaping their squad heading into the deadline. The Fofana sale is part of a wider clear-out of young and fringe players from a famously bloated roster, balanced by targeted moves like Martinez and potential midfield reinforcements.

The strategy is ruthless: trim, upgrade, and keep the door revolving until Alonso has the profile of squad he wants.

Enzo Fernandez: The Big Question

Hovering over all of this is one name: Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentina international continues to be linked with Manchester City, with speculation intensifying after he did not feature in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton. His absence only poured fuel on the rumours that the champions are circling.

Asked about the decision, Xabi Alonso framed it as a football call rather than a transfer signal.

“We assess individually, collectively what is the best for the team for tonight, what is better for other players that were playing,” Alonso said, via ESPN. “It was our decision, from myself and from the club.”

So far, Chelsea have not received an offer they consider acceptable for Fernandez. That stance has held through the summer. The question now is whether the final days of the window force a rethink.

With Fofana gone, Martinez in, Camara talks alive and the Fernandez situation simmering, Chelsea are deep into a high-stakes rebuild. The deals done already are significant — but the next few days could define the entire direction of Alonso’s first season.
