Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, a move that fits neatly into Xabi Alonso’s blueprint for a side comfortable in a back five with aggressive wing-backs.
With Marc Cucurella sold to Real Madrid and Marco Palestra already brought in to patrol the right, the left side needed urgent attention. Chavarria, 28, has been earmarked specifically as an attack-minded option at left wing-back, a player who can live high up the pitch when Alonso flips the switch.
Chelsea struck a deal with Rayo worth €19m plus €2m in add-ons and tied the Spaniard down on a long-term contract running until 2031. On Wednesday morning, the club made it official.
“Chelsea is delighted to announce the signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano,” read the statement. “The Spaniard has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031 and will begin working with his new team-mates at Cobham as we prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.”

Enzo, City and a £120m standoff
The real noise around Stamford Bridge right now doesn’t concern the new arrival. It’s about Enzo Fernandez and whether he will still be in blue when the window shuts.
Chelsea are open to a sale, but only on their terms. The price is set at £120m. No discounts, no gentle climb via add-ons. Pay it, or move on.
Reports suggested the stance might soften once the new season kicks off and the days tick down towards the deadline. Ben Jacobs even indicated that Chelsea could consider lowering their demands between the opening weekend and the end of the window, noting the club want their first-team squad settled before they face Fulham on 24 August.
That is not the message coming from Fabrizio Romano.
According to Romano, Chelsea have no intention of trimming the fee. He has also underlined that the club are ready to make negotiations as awkward as possible for Manchester City, with tension still lingering from Enzo Maresca’s exit from Stamford Bridge earlier this year and his swift appointment at the Etihad.
Romano revealed that “some contacts” have already taken place between Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, and City. Inside those conversations, the message from Manchester has been clear: there is strong interest in Enzo, led by Maresca himself.
Maresca, who worked closely with Fernandez at Chelsea, has repeatedly flagged the midfielder as a key target during City’s internal planning for the summer window. That admiration predates the current storm around Rodri’s future and his expected move to Barcelona.
City are already pushing to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, but they want another major name in midfield once Rodri goes. Enzo sits high on that list.
Chelsea dig in
Despite that, Chelsea are in no rush to cash in.
Romano reports that the club feel “very relaxed” about Fernandez’s situation. They are “more than happy” to keep him, convinced that the issues of last season lay around the squad rather than with Enzo himself. Under Alonso, they believe he can climb another level and become a central figure in the new project.
For Chelsea, the equation is simple: Fernandez stays unless someone pays the full £120m, as a fixed fee. No add-ons, no creative structures.
City, for their part, are not expected to go that high. They hope Chelsea might blink and open a window for negotiation. Right now, that window is firmly shut.
Romano has stressed that if Chelsea maintain their stance, any deal for Enzo to City remains “complicated”. Everything hinges on the numbers. And on Chelsea’s willingness to even pick up the phone.
There is another layer. The bad blood over Maresca’s departure means Chelsea want to feel fully compensated if they are to sell a player of Fernandez’s stature to City. Pride is in the room alongside the accountants.
Inside the club, the message is hardening. Romano has described Chelsea’s position as “take it or leave it” within days, with no appetite to drag this saga towards the end of the window. In a follow-up update, he doubled down: Chelsea are “more than happy” to keep Enzo, believe he will thrive under Alonso, and want his camp to “forget about” a late scramble.
So the lines are drawn. Chavarria is through the door, the left flank reinforced. At the other end of the pitch, one of Europe’s richest clubs is staring at a £120m wall.
