Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in Talks to Sell Chelsea Stakes as Clearlake Capital Aims for Full Control

The ownership of Chelsea FC is on the verge of a significant shake-up since the post-Roman Abramovich takeover in 2022. Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly negotiating to sell their shares to majority owner Clearlake Capital, which could end the BlueCo partnership that has seen huge spending and frequent managerial changes at Stamford Bridge.

BlueCo Consortium's Stake Sale

Boehly and Walter are discussing selling their stakes to Clearlake, just over four years after the BlueCo consortium acquired the club for around £2.5 billion. The proposed deal could value the club at more than £5 billion now. Clearlake holds 61.5% ownership, while Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss share the remaining 38.5% equally.

This potential exit follows a period where Chelsea invested nearly £1.5 billion in player transfers since May 2022, but still have not secured a Premier League or Champions League title. The club has experienced instability marked by inconsistent performances and frequent changes in management.

Internal Disputes and Stadium Plans

Despite official denials about conflicts between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly, reports suggest ongoing talks for two years regarding a buyout amid internal disagreements. A major issue seems to be a lack of consensus on plans for a new stadium.

The complicated ownership structure has also drawn criticism from fans concerned about high ticket prices and the multi-club approach used by BlueCo.

Xabi Alonso’s New Sporting Vision

In the midst of boardroom uncertainty, Xabi Alonso has taken charge of the first team after a summer featuring over £300 million spent on new players and £143 million earned from sales. Alonso’s appointment signals a fresh direction following the brief spell under Liam Rosenior.

Alonso stresses the need for experienced players rather than relying solely on young talent’s potential. To this end, Chelsea signed Premier League veterans Jordan Henderson (36) and Danny Welbeck (35), injecting much-needed leadership into the squad. This marks a shift from previous transfer windows dominated by expensive, unproven youth signings.

Clearlake’s Growing Control

If the sale goes ahead, Clearlake Capital, led by Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, will gain near-total control over Chelsea’s operations. A governance agreement means the chairman role will likely move from Boehly to a Clearlake representative next May.

For players and coaching staff, the hope is that resolving ownership issues will bring stability to a club long troubled by off-field drama. As Chelsea prepare to face West London rivals Fulham in their Premier League opener, attention turns to whether Alonso’s revamped squad can deliver results despite the boardroom changes.
