Chelsea's New Defender Palestra: Versatile Addition for Premier League

On the eve of Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday night, Alonso made it clear why the club is so excited about their new defender Palestra – and why English crowds might need a moment to adjust to him.

The Spaniard pointed straight at the Italian schooling that shaped the newcomer.

“I would say it's probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it's quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles,” Alonso said. “It doesn't matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy. He's something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it's quite common.”

That tactical upbringing means Palestra can operate comfortably on either side of the defence, a trait that gives Alonso extra flexibility in a league where specialists usually dominate the back line.

The impact has not been limited to the pitch.

“He's had a great impact as well in the changing room. He's integrated really well,” Alonso added. “He's a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he's a very great addition to the club.”

Versatility on the grass, personality in the dressing room. As Chelsea walk into Craven Cottage to start their season, Palestra already looks like more than just another new signing.
