Chelsea's Long Game with Ahanor: Palace Secures Rising Defender

Chelsea have secured a deal for teenage defender Ahanor – but Crystal Palace will feel the benefit long before the Blues do.

Standard Sport revealed last week that Chelsea had reached an agreement for the 18-year-old, settled personal terms and even cleared him to travel to London for a medical. The pathway looked straightforward: sign, then slot into Chelsea’s long-term project.

Instead, Chelsea have pivoted. Ahanor will now join Crystal Palace on loan from Atalanta, with his permanent move to Stamford Bridge delayed until the summer of 2027.

The twist comes down to a quirk in Chelsea’s dealings with Palace. The Blues have already sent Axel Disasi across the capital on a season-long loan, a deal with no option or obligation to buy. With Disasi already in at Selhurst Park, Chelsea have opted to structure Ahanor’s move so that, for now, he arrives as an Atalanta player rather than a Chelsea loanee.

For Palace, it is a significant coup. Ahanor is a product of the Genoa academy and has already broken into the Italy senior set-up, winning two caps this year after making his debut earlier in the campaign. He played 28 times in Serie A for Atalanta last season and tasted Champions League football for the first time in September, a rapid rise that has not gone unnoticed across Europe.

Chelsea, though, are clearly thinking in cycles rather than weeks. By parking his arrival until 2027, they lock in a high-upside defender while giving him Premier League minutes at a club where opportunities should be immediate and responsibility heavy.

The recruitment drive at Stamford Bridge does not stop at the back. Chelsea remain keen on Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are exploring a move for the 22-year-old. That interest grows louder as uncertainty swirls around Enzo Fernandez, who has now missed two Chelsea matches in a row amid strong attention from Manchester City.

Fernandez sat out the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend, a decision Xabi Alonso framed as purely about focus and commitment.

"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," the Chelsea manager said.

Chelsea are reshaping their spine with one eye on the next game and the other on the next three years. Palace, for now, get the immediate boost: Disasi at the heart of defence and Ahanor on the way, while the Blues quietly stockpile for a very different-looking squad in 2027.
