Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace, and it could be the domino that finally sends Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a record-breaking deal.

Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Roma midfielder Manu Kone and are now driving hard to get the transfer over the line before the window shuts, according to multiple reports.

The London club have made no secret of their willingness to cash in on Enzo Fernandez this summer. The stance is clear: Fernandez can leave if two conditions are met. Chelsea want their full £120m valuation, and they want a replacement in place first.

That replacement now looks increasingly likely to be Kone.

Reports in recent days had linked Chelsea with two main candidates – Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Roma’s Kone – but the focus has shifted decisively towards the 25-year-old Roma man. Online outlet FootballTransfers claimed Chelsea had already agreed personal terms with Kone and were now pushing to close the deal.

French journalist Santi Aouna then backed that up, revealing that Chelsea had made official contact with Roma to discuss a transfer. He reported that talks between the clubs are ongoing as the Blues try to prise the midfielder away from Serie A.

Big bid on the table – but Roma resist

The pressure finally told in the form of a sizeable offer. Italian journalist Nico Schira reported that Chelsea have put forward a bid worth €65m (around £56m) for Kone, even though Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini considers the player “non-transferable”.

Schira added that the decision now rests with both the midfielder and Roma owner Dan Friedkin, underlining how politically sensitive a sale would be in the Italian capital.

Just as that figure was circulating, another heavyweight voice in the Italian market weighed in. Gianluca Di Marzio described the move as an “advanced” deal between Chelsea and Roma, but suggested the fee under discussion is lower than Schira’s number, putting it at around £52m.

Either way, the direction of travel is obvious: Chelsea are closing in.

Record-breaking Enzo deal edging closer

All of this circles back to Enzo Fernandez and Manchester City.

City are ready to make the Argentina international their marquee signing of the summer, with a proposed £120m move that would shatter the club’s transfer record and set a new benchmark for the most expensive midfielder in football history.

Fernandez is understood to be desperate to make the switch to the Etihad. Chelsea, for their part, are open to selling once their demands are met. Secure the fee. Secure the replacement. Then the door opens.

If Roma finally relent and allow Kone to leave, Chelsea’s last major condition will be satisfied. At that point, the path clears for City to land the player they see as the centrepiece of their next evolution.
