Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernández-sized hole in their midfield – and could turn to a familiar Premier League face in Georginio Wijnaldum.

Deadline day at Stamford Bridge was chaotic, even by Chelsea’s recent standards. Fernández’s protracted move to Manchester City finally went through for a staggering £125million, a record fee that dominated the final hours of the window.
Chelsea had lined up Lamine Camara from Monaco as the heir to the World Cup winner, but that pursuit collapsed before the deadline. No deal, no replacement, just a gaping space in the centre of Xabi Alonso’s team.
With the window now shut, Alonso and the club have been forced down a different path.
Wijnaldum back on the radar
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have contacted Wijnaldum, who is a free agent after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer. At 35, he is no long-term project, but he is available, proven and battle-hardened in the Premier League.
Alonso views the Dutchman as an experienced stop-gap, someone who can steady the middle of the pitch while the new manager imposes his ideas and the squad absorbs the shock of Fernández’s exit.
Wijnaldum knows this league inside out. He became a key cog in Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool machine, winning the Premier League title in 2020 and making 277 appearances in English football across spells with Newcastle and the Reds. He built a reputation for timing his runs, scoring important goals and knitting together midfield and attack.
His stint at Al-Ettifaq showed there is still fuel in the tank. Seventeen goals in 34 games underline that he remains an effective presence, even if it was not enough to earn an extension in Saudi Arabia.
Alonso’s midfield puzzle
Alonso has wasted no time stamping his authority on Chelsea’s style. So far this season, he has handed Romeo Lavia starts in both league games at the base of midfield. Around him, he has experimented: Reece James and Cole Palmer have both been used in central roles, while Fernández was left out amid the noise surrounding his future.
The new head coach has been clear that sentiment will not dictate his decisions. After Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton, Alonso addressed the Fernández situation without giving much away.
“We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win,” he said.
That “team to challenge” now looks thin in the engine room. Moises Caicedo, signed for £115m and expected to be a cornerstone of the midfield, limped off on Sunday, raising fresh concerns over depth and durability in a key area of the pitch.
A short-term fix with title-winning pedigree
All of that has pushed Chelsea towards a solution they did not expect to consider at the start of the summer: a veteran, free-agent midfielder with a Champions League and Premier League pedigree.
Wijnaldum would not arrive as a statement of the future, but as a stabiliser for the present. A player who has lived through title races, high-pressure nights and dressing rooms full of stars. A player who knows what it takes to navigate the grind of an English season.
Chelsea have spent vast sums building for tomorrow. The next move may be about surviving today.
