Chelsea Furious as Monaco Cancels €55m Lamine Camara Transfer After Liverpool's Deadline Day Move
Chelsea found themselves shocked when Monaco abruptly canceled the €55 million (£47m) transfer for Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara on deadline day. The Blues had agreed to sign Camara as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who left for Manchester City. Yet, late contact from Liverpool triggered Monaco’s sudden withdrawal from the deal.
Deadline Day Drama and Financial Pressure
The transfer seemed set after Chelsea and Monaco settled on a €55m fee. Chelsea pushed hard following Fernandez's £125 million departure. Initially, Monaco rejected two bids for Camara but later opened talks due to urgent financial needs.
Monaco faced money issues after a proposed £40m move of Folarin Balogun to Everton stalled because of medical problems. This situation gave Chelsea a chance to strike a quick, reduced-price agreement just hours before the Premier League window shut.
Suddenly, Monaco pulled out despite a signed club-to-club agreement. Everton renegotiated Balogun's deal at a lower fee, easing Monaco's finances. Oddly, Balogun then refused the Everton move after the deadline, leaving him in France and Chelsea without Camara, reported talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs.
Chelsea Sees Monaco’s U-Turn as Unprofessional
"Chelsea officials are extremely angry with Monaco's last-minute withdrawal," said Ben Jacobs. "They see it as deeply unprofessional."
Once Monaco canceled the agreement, Chelsea could have also backed out of their £125m sale of Fernandez to Manchester City but honored their contract instead.
Sources suggest Monaco pulled back because they believe they can get a €70m price for Camara later. Contact from Merseyside boosted this confidence, although Liverpool did not interfere directly with Chelsea's talks.
Xabi Alonso Faces Midfield Crisis
Xabi Alonso now confronts a major challenge managing Chelsea's midfield. With Fernandez gone and Camara deal off, the squad is thin in central midfield. Earlier attempts to sign Manu Kone failed when Roma's coach Gian Piero Gasperini blocked the move.
The shortage was clear in Chelsea’s hectic 4-3 win over Brighton. Moises Caicedo got injured after coming on as a substitute, joining veteran Jordan Henderson on the sidelines.
Romeo Lavia just returned after a disrupted period, and summer signing Valentin Barco lacks experience. Alonso had to use natural right-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto in midfield roles to cover gaps.
Stretched Squad Faces Tough Challenge Ahead
Alonso must steer Chelsea through the early Premier League fixtures with a weakened squad. Without Fernandez and Camara, makeshift solutions will dominate while the medical team works hard to recover Caicedo and Henderson.
Chelsea’s next test comes against reigning champions Arsenal on Sunday. The Blues need to hold on until the January transfer window. Meanwhile, Monaco keeps Camara, hoping for a bigger payday down the line.
