Chelsea Firm on Enzo Fernandez Transfer Terms

Chelsea have drawn a hard line in the sand over Enzo Fernandez – and it now looks immovable.

The club are preparing for offers for the Argentina international but, according to The Athletic’s Deal Sheet, it will take far more than expected to even start a conversation. The £120 million figure that had been widely attached to Fernandez was not a public auction price. It was part of a verbal understanding between player and club.

Back in the spring, Chelsea are said to have told Enzo that if a bid of £120m landed on the table, they would not block his exit. That window has now closed. The deadline on that gentleman’s agreement has “expired”, and with it any sense that the midfielder can push for a move on previously discussed terms.

If Fernandez stays put, the message from Stamford Bridge is simple: he knew the conditions. The route out that once existed no longer does.

The market has shifted around him as well. Huge fees for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali have reset expectations on what a top central midfielder costs. Against that backdrop, Chelsea are now thought to be ready to demand even more than £120m for Enzo, especially from domestic rivals.

They do not want to strengthen another Premier League contender while leaving themselves scrambling for a replacement in a thin market. With their incoming business largely done and the squad balanced for the season, losing Fernandez would rip a hole straight through the middle of Enzo Maresca’s plans.

So Chelsea move into the final stretch of the window with a clear stance: sell to trim, not to tear down. And one player who will definitely be part of that picture is Emmanuel Emegha, with a decision made to keep the forward in the first-team squad for the campaign ahead.
