Chelsea Set Firm Deadline for Enzo Fernandez Amid City Midfield Shake-Up
Chelsea have put Manchester City on the clock. If the champions want Enzo Fernandez, they have until 5pm today – and they will have to pay full price.
The Stamford Bridge hierarchy have told City they will not entertain drawn-out haggling over the Argentina international and are holding firm on a £120m valuation. City had hoped to negotiate that figure down, but Chelsea are in no mood to compromise, especially with relations between the clubs already strained.
Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea for City after a single season in charge, is a major admirer of Fernandez. City were forced to pay £17m in compensation to prise the Italian away, and Chelsea publicly admitted they felt “let down” by their former head coach for negotiating with City while still in post. Now, with Fernandez, Chelsea hold the leverage – and they are using it.
City’s midfield, though, is already braced for major change.
Rodri talks rumble on as Reijnders heads for Saudi
While Chelsea dig in over Fernandez, Barcelona continue to push for Rodri. Sky Sports News report that City have already turned down a second offer of £55m for the World Cup winner, yet the Catalans have not walked away and discussions remain active.
At the same time, City are ready to cash in elsewhere in the middle of the park. Tijjani Reijnders is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah after the sides agreed a £51m deal. The Dutchman has accepted personal terms and will depart the Etihad after just one season, having arrived from AC Milan for £46.5m last summer.
Reijnders’ exit continues a sweeping rebuild in City’s engine room and pushes their summer income towards the £100m mark, with Nathan Ake’s move to Fenerbahce and James Trafford’s switch to Leeds already banked.
City are also positioning themselves for the future. They are in pole position to sign Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, one of the standout young performers at the World Cup, while Savinho is moving closer to a permanent exit, with Tottenham advancing a £65m deal for the Brazilian winger.
If Rodri does go and Fernandez does not arrive, City’s midfield could look very different – and very quickly.
Spurs press on with Savinho as De Zerbi reshapes squad
Tottenham, meanwhile, are charging ahead with their own overhaul under Roberto De Zerbi and are “moving in the right direction” on a deal for Savinho, according to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney.
Spurs are close to an agreement worth £65m plus add-ons for the 22-year-old, who joined City from Troyes in 2024 for just over £30m. The Brazilian would add pace and direct running to De Zerbi’s attack, another high-end piece in a summer of aggressive recruitment.
The north London club have already brought in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka and Cole Ramsey. Only Chelsea have spent more in this Premier League window. Savinho would be another clear statement that Spurs intend to close the gap on the elite rather than settle for transition.
Atletico close in on Cristian Romero
On the other side of north London, there is movement out of Tottenham. Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle to sign Cristian Romero in a package worth around £34.2m with add-ons, according to Sky Sports. A 15 per cent sell-on clause is expected to be included.
Inter Milan had also been linked with the Argentina defender, but Atletico have stepped ahead in the race and are also expected to secure a deal for Djed Spence. For Spurs, Romero’s departure would be another sign of De Zerbi’s readiness to reshape his back line as well as his midfield.
Arsenal’s Martinelli dilemma and the Osimhen question
Across the capital, Arsenal’s window is far from over. Mikel Arteta has made it clear the Gunners’ business is still active, and the future of Gabriel Martinelli has suddenly become one of the sagas to watch.
Galatasaray have lodged a £38.5m bid for the Brazil winger, who, at 25, sits at what should be his prime. Journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Martinelli tops the Turkish champions’ list of targets.
Arsenal have already signed wide man Christos Tzolis and remain linked with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and PSG’s Bradley Barcola. That depth on the flanks has opened the door to serious questions about Martinelli’s role.
Into that conversation steps Victor Osimhen. The Telegraph report that talks between Arsenal and Galatasaray have also involved the Nigeria striker. It is not yet clear whether Arsenal are actively driving a move or whether Osimhen has simply been offered to them, but the idea of the forward being folded into a Martinelli deal – plus a reduced fee – is understood to be a scenario Galatasaray would welcome.
Arsenal want another attacker. Martinelli’s potential exit, Osimhen’s availability and the club’s long-standing ambition to add a top-tier No 9 could yet collide in one of the window’s most dramatic late twists.
Liverpool bide their time over Barcola
Liverpool, like Arsenal, are circling Bradley Barcola. The PSG winger sits high on the Reds’ list of attacking targets, and talks are under way over a possible fee. The European champions have set a sky-high valuation at around €170m (£145m), but Liverpool are prepared to wait.
GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs reports that Liverpool expect PSG to soften their stance if they bring in one or more new attackers this window. The Merseyside club have effectively cooled their interest in another PSG forward, Ibrahim Mbaye, given the financial strain of signing both.
PSG have already moved for Monaco midfielder Maghnes Akliouche in a €50m deal, yet they would likely need to secure a winger or striker before entertaining a reduced price for Barcola. Arsenal are also credited with an interest and could step in if they are willing to commit to a huge outlay.
For now, Luis Enrique is saying little. Asked directly about Barcola’s future ahead of Wednesday’s Super Cup clash with Aston Villa in Salzburg, the PSG head coach refused to be drawn, insisting he would not discuss any player individually and would remain focused on his team.
Barcola, who scored three goals for France at the World Cup, only returned to training last Monday with PSG’s other French and Spanish internationals. He could still feature against Villa even as speculation about his next move intensifies.
A window on a knife-edge
Chelsea’s hard deadline for Enzo Fernandez, Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri, Tottenham’s push for Savinho, Arsenal’s flirtation with an Osimhen-led reshuffle and Liverpool’s patient stalking of Barcola – all of it points to a market that is still crackling with possibility.
