Chelsea Set £50m Price for Delap Amid Squad Overhaul
Chelsea are prepared to cut ties with Delap just a year after bringing him to Stamford Bridge, with the club placing a £50 million price tag on the striker as they trim down an overloaded squad ahead of the new season.
The Blues triggered a £30m release clause to sign Delap from Ipswich Town 12 months ago, but patience has already worn thin. Senior figures are now open to a sale if their valuation is met, with several Premier League clubs alerted to the opportunity. Everton and Nottingham Forest are tracking the situation closely, waiting to see whether Chelsea soften their stance or stand firm on the fee.
Delap’s first season in west London never truly got going. Two goals in all competitions told its own story in a campaign that saw Chelsea miss out on European qualification and fall to defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup final. When the pressure rose, he struggled to impose himself.
Pre-season has done little to change that picture. Delap has failed to convince Xabi Alonso that he should be central to Chelsea’s plans, leaving his long-term future in serious doubt as the club edges towards the September 1 transfer deadline. Everton’s Interest
Everton’s interest carries an extra layer of intrigue. Former Toffees scout Bryan King has already floated Goodison Park as the perfect stage for Delap, pointing to Romelu Lukaku’s transformative loan spell on Merseyside as a template. Lukaku, King noted, “went on loan and really made his name up at Everton” – a route Delap could look to mirror if a move materialises.
Chelsea’s stance, though, is clear: a permanent transfer is the preferred outcome if any club is willing to meet the £50m asking price. Delap is not the only attacker under scrutiny. The club are working through a broader reset of their forward options, with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu also drawing interest over both loan and permanent deals as the hierarchy looks to slim down what they view as a bloated department.
The reshaping does not stop in the final third. At the back, negotiations continue over potential exits for Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, while Benfica are monitoring Tosin Adarabioyo. Younger defenders Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino could be sent out on loan, with Chelsea keen to secure regular minutes for their prospects rather than leave them on the fringes.
All of it feeds into one big decision for Alonso: how ruthless he wants to be as he stamps his authority on this squad before the window shuts. For Delap, the stakes are stark. Either Everton, Forest or another suitor steps up with a concrete offer that promises regular football, or he risks slipping into a secondary role at Chelsea just as the new Premier League season roars into life.
