Chelsea Academy Quartet Depart as Cobham Era Concludes
Chelsea have confirmed that four long-serving academy players will leave the club when their contracts expire on 30 June, drawing a line under a combined decades-long investment at Cobham.
Hughes bows out after 13-year journey
For defender Brodi Hughes, it brings an end to a 13-year association with the Blues.
He joined Chelsea as an Under-8, one of the many young hopefuls walking through the doors at Cobham with a dream and a tracksuit several sizes too big. Over the years he grew into a versatile defender, trusted across the back line as he climbed each age group.
Last season, Hughes stepped into senior football with a loan spell at League One side AFC Wimbledon, a key stage in his development and a clear sign of the club’s belief in his potential. Now, with his deal running down, both parties part ways as he looks to turn that experience into a permanent platform elsewhere.
Olise departs after decade of service
Richard Olise’s time at Chelsea also closes after ten years. Signed as an Under-9, he became a familiar presence throughout the academy system, consistently involved as he progressed through the ranks.
His work did not go unnoticed. During the 2024/25 season he earned a place in the first-team squad for Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League trip to Astana, a milestone that underlined how close he came to a breakthrough at senior level. That door never fully opened, but the inclusion itself marked him out as one of Cobham’s trusted operators.
Rak-Sakyi moves on after first-team taste
Midfielder Sam Rak-Sakyi, another to join the club at eight years old, will also leave this summer. His journey, like so many at Cobham, blended academy progress with international recognition, as he represented England at youth level while establishing himself as a reliable figure in Chelsea’s age-group sides.
Rak-Sakyi managed what so many academy players chase: a first-team debut. He featured four times for the senior side, all in the UEFA Conference League. His debut came against Noah in the 2024/25 campaign, and he went on to make three further appearances in the competition, gaining valuable experience under the European lights before the club opted not to extend his stay.
Tauriainen’s brief first-team chapter closes
The final confirmed departure is Finnish youth international Jimi Tauriainen, who joined Chelsea in 2020 and quickly caught the eye with his technical ability and movement.
His Chelsea story carries two standout moments. He was named on the bench for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in 2024, a huge stage for any young player to be involved in, even without stepping onto the pitch. The real breakthrough arrived days later: an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Leeds United, where he made his first-team debut.
A Premier League bow followed later that same season, as he came on against Tottenham Hotspur. Those appearances hinted at a possible long-term role, but the club have now confirmed his exit, leaving him to build on those flashes of top-flight exposure away from Stamford Bridge.
Stutter handed short-term extension
One young forward will stay on, at least for now. Striker Ronnie Stutter has agreed a month-to-month contract with Chelsea, a short-term arrangement that keeps him in the building while his longer-term future is assessed.
For a club that prides itself on its academy production line, these exits mark another reshaping of the next generation. Cobham rarely stands still. Players move on, new faces emerge, and the cycle continues.
Chelsea have thanked all four departing players for their contribution and wished them well. The next step, for each of them, is simple and daunting in equal measure: turn years of promise into permanent careers in the unforgiving world beyond Cobham’s gates.
