Carrick turns up transfer heat as United circle PSG starlet Mbaye
Manchester United are braced for a frantic finish to the transfer window, with Michael Carrick making it clear he expects more reinforcements – and fast.
Back in the Champions League and back under real scrutiny, United know this squad is not yet built to go the distance on all fronts. A third-place finish last season gave Carrick a platform. It also exposed the gaps.
“We want more, we need more”
United’s summer business so far has been steady rather than spectacular. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arrived a month ago as part of a midfield reshuffle, while experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow has come through the door alongside several younger prospects.
Carrick appreciates the work done, but he is not pretending it is enough.
“We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that,” he said, underlining the club’s stance as the window ticks towards its conclusion. “Money’s money, I get that.
“We feel like we have to be pushing for everything we’re involved in, while being realistic of what the recent history’s looked like over a period of time.
“For now, we’ve got to make the most of it, but we’ve got to push every boundary we can to be able to win again, basically. That’s the challenge.”
The message is blunt: United are back at Europe’s top table and Carrick is demanding the depth to stay there.
Mbaye chase opens up
One of the names on the radar is Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain winger who has caught the eye across Europe. United are among several clubs tracking the teenager as he tries to break through in a PSG squad already stacked with forwards.
The competition for his signature looked fierce. Then the landscape shifted.
Liverpool, searching for wide options after Mohamed Salah’s departure from Anfield, had been linked with Mbaye while also pursuing his PSG teammate Bradley Barcola. Now reports suggest the Merseyside club have cooled their interest in Mbaye, baulking at a £42.7m valuation.
That stance hands United a clear boost. The fee remains hefty for a player still fighting for regular first-team minutes in Paris, but one major Premier League rival appears to have stepped aside.
Carrick has called for more quality and more depth. The question now is whether United are prepared to meet PSG’s price and turn a promising link into a statement signing.
