Carrick Committed to Keeping Fernandes Central to United's Plans

Michael Carrick is refusing to be dragged into contract politics, but his message on Bruno Fernandes is unmistakable: Manchester United’s captain remains central to everything he wants to build.

Fernandes, now 31, has entered the final year of his deal at Old Trafford. United can trigger a 12‑month extension, yet a £57m release clause hangs over the situation and has alerted Juventus, AC Milan and Galatasaray, who are weighing up whether to make a move.

For United, the ideal scenario is simple. Fernandes stays. The reality is more complicated. Talks over fresh terms have stalled and, as things stand, there has been no breakthrough on a new contract.

Carrick, speaking in Maynooth on Thursday, steered clear of the contractual wrangle. He chose his words carefully, but the intent behind them was clear enough.

“Listen, we want top players,” he said. “Every good team has players that have made a major impact. That's how it is. Bruno has had that for a period of time here. We want to keep pushing and want to get the best out of Bruno and the team around him.”

That last line matters. Carrick is not just protecting an asset; he is building around a leader.

Fernandes’ value to United has never been confined to goals, assists and creative sparks from midfield. Inside the dressing room and on the training pitch, he has become a reference point for younger players, a sounding board and a standard‑setter.

“He's been so positive since I came back,” Carrick explained. “As much as the performances, it's how he has been around the group, how he leads and takes time to help others, especially the younger players. That comes into play. He's in a really good place and looking forward to the season.”

So while Europe’s heavyweights circle and the release clause invites speculation, Carrick’s stance is rooted in the here and now. He sees a captain locked in, influential, and ready to drive United into a new campaign.

The question is no longer whether Fernandes is important to Manchester United. It’s how long the club can keep their most influential figure at the centre of the project.
