Carlos Queiroz Returns as Ghana Head Coach Weeks After Resigning

Carlos Queiroz has been unexpectedly reappointed as the head coach of Ghana less than two months after stepping down following their World Cup exit. The former Real Madrid manager initially left the role after the Black Stars’ tournament disappointment but is now set to lead the team again during this month’s international fixtures.

Brief First Spell Ends Suddenly

The 73-year-old tactician resigned in July, ending a stint that lasted under three months. He was hired in April to replace Otto Addo, who was dismissed. Despite declaring his departure, Queiroz has returned to take charge once more, surprising many in the football world.

GFA Supports Queiroz’s Return

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed Queiroz’s comeback on Thursday, expressing full confidence in his ability to guide the team forward. An official statement said the GFA values Queiroz’s broad international experience and understanding of the Black Stars, which make him well-suited for the next stage of the team’s journey.

The GFA stated: “We are pleased to announce an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme.”

More details about his new role and upcoming plans will be shared soon as the GFA and Queiroz focus on building a strong future for Ghana on the international scene.

A Coach With Vast International Experience

This is Queiroz’s ninth national team job. He previously led Iran through three World Cups and took Portugal to the last 16 in 2010. His resume also includes managing South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman.

During his first short spell with Ghana, Queiroz oversaw a memorable 1-0 win over Panama thanks to a late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi, followed by a goalless draw against England and a 2-1 loss to Croatia.

At club level, Queiroz worked as Sir Alex Ferguson’s trusted assistant at Manchester United, contributing to three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League trophy. He also had a high-profile season as Real Madrid’s head coach in 2003-04.

Immediate Return to Action

Queiroz won’t wait long before resuming his duties. The GFA confirmed his new term begins during the upcoming international window this month. The Black Stars aim to quickly adapt to his tactical approach as they rebuild after the World Cup.

His task is to stabilise the squad and lay a solid foundation ahead of their future matches.
