Calvin Ramsay's Liverpool Exit: A New Chapter at St Mirren
Liverpool’s summer rebuild is still crackling with activity, but one story has already reached its quiet conclusion: Calvin Ramsay is heading home to Scotland, and almost certainly away from Anfield for good.
Liverpool juggle big-money targets and exits
At the top end of the market, Liverpool are still locked in talks for two wide forwards. Bradley Barcola remains on the radar, though his price tag is eye-watering. Reports in France suggest Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to cash in on the 23-year-old, but only at around £120 million as they plan for his potential exit.
On the south coast, Brighton are digging in over Yankuba Minteh. The Seagulls believe they can squeeze full value from one of the most coveted young wingers around, and their valuation of the 22-year-old has now climbed to £80 million.
Whether Richard Hughes is prepared to play at those numbers is another matter. There is a very real prospect Liverpool simply walk away rather than smash their structure for either player.
At the same time, the outgoing door needs clearing. Stefan Bajcetic, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott are all set to move on as the newly crowned 2024/25 Premier League champions reshape the squad around Arne Slot’s ideas.
Ramsay’s Liverpool chapter winds down
One decision has already been made. Calvin Ramsay will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at St Mirren, a move that effectively signals the end of his Liverpool career.
It has been a stop-start, often brutal spell for the 23-year-old since he arrived from Aberdeen in 2022 for a little over £4 million. Instead of growing into Trent Alexander-Arnold’s understudy, he has lived out of a suitcase: loan spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock, but never a run that truly stuck.
For some Liverpool supporters, Slot’s readiness to discard the Scotland international felt harsh, especially after last season’s glaring issues at right-back. Ramsay never really got the chance to test himself in that storm.
Now he does – just not in red.
St Mirren hand Ramsay a reset
St Mirren see opportunity where Liverpool see closure. Manager Craig McLeish made no attempt to play down his excitement, describing Ramsay’s talent as “exceptional” and underlining just how central this year could be for the defender.
"It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group," McLeish told BBC Sport.
The deal runs in parallel with Ramsay’s Liverpool contract, which expires in 2027. That timing is telling. Liverpool have effectively sanctioned a long goodbye, allowing him to see out his deal away from Merseyside while he auditions for his next permanent home in the Scottish Premiership.
He leaves Anfield with only four senior appearances to his name, all under Jurgen Klopp – a brief flicker rather than the full breakthrough many had imagined when he crossed the border as one of Scotland’s brightest young full-backs.
Now comes the hard question: can an “exceptional” year in Paisley turn a forgotten Liverpool prospect into one of the most sought-after defenders in Scotland?
