Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women's Coaching Staff
Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to the international stage, with the former Everton manager joining the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their World Cup play-off push later this year.
The Dane is expected to come in as assistant coach, working alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley as part of an expanded backroom team. His arrival adds top-level WSL experience to a staff gearing up for a high-pressure qualifying campaign.
Sorensen will not be leaving club football behind. He is understood to be staying in his role as technical director with Aston Villa Women, linking up with the Republic of Ireland squad only during international windows. It’s a dual responsibility that underlines his growing influence in the women’s game.
There will be a familiar face on the training pitch. Sorensen will work under manager Carla Ward, who went head-to-head with his Everton side in the Women’s Super League during her time in charge at Villa. Now, instead of plotting against each other, they will be combining ideas on the same touchline.
Upcoming Matches
Ireland’s task is clear. They face Kazakhstan in the first round of Women’s World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie that will be played on 9 and 13 October.
By then, Sorensen will be embedded in the set-up, part of a coaching team trying to turn those two dates into a launchpad for something bigger.
