Brian Sorensen Returns as Assistant Coach for Ireland Women’s World Cup Play-Offs
Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to international football as he prepares to join the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their World Cup play-off push later this year.
The former Everton manager is expected to be appointed assistant coach with Ireland, working alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley in a refreshed backroom team.
Sorensen will combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa Women, linking up with Ireland during international windows rather than leaving his club post. It keeps him embedded in the Women’s Super League while adding a high-stakes international challenge.
He will reunite with Ireland boss Carla Ward, who went up against his Everton side during her spell in charge of Villa in the WSL. This time, they will be on the same side, tasked with guiding Ireland through a tricky play-off route.
Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of Women’s World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. The margins will be tight. The preparation time even tighter.
Sorensen’s arrival drops another experienced voice into the dressing room just as Ireland step into knockout territory, where one bad night can end a campaign and one good week can change the direction of a generation.
